I'm a senior next year.. If I apply to an ivy school, and they reject me, would I be able to then take a gap year and following the gap year apply again? How does that work?

Alot of apps have the question "Have you ever applied to or attended ______ University/College?" If you answer 'yes' (which you would have to) they'll probably want an explanation.

What about the common app?

Yes, you can take a gap year and apply again. Whether that would be a good idea is another question. Part of it will depend on your other options.

And a lot of it would depend on what you want to do with your gap year. If you have a plan that's more than "I want to apply again", you know what you want to do, you have a reason to do it, it's fullfilling in its own right, and you can afford it, then by all means consider a gap year. If it's just to get into a particular school and you're looking for "what will make me look better to them", I'd suggest that you forget it.

If you plan out your college search carefully, find some safety schools that you like (yes, they're out there and you can get a great education and have a wonderful experience at them), and apply yourself, you should have some great options come next April. Then you can decide if a gap year makes sense for you.

and one can always transfer. All the Ivies except Princeton accept transfers. Go to the best school you can, do extremely well, and apply.

And you might even find that you like where you are...
