I rejected Vassar's freshman admission offer, and I don't know if I made the right decision. I'm not sure if I'm going to transfer, but will this hurt my chances?
I haven't done anything really spectacular in my first term of college, i.e. no leadership positions.
-first year at Bryn Mawr
-expecting 3.7 gpa
-didn't do anything last summer.. nothing
-extracurriculars now:
school newspaper
work- dining hall
maybe tutoring kids next semester
-second semester senior year gpa 91uw/94w
I got a 75 in calc, 5 pt drop from first semester, but a 5 on the ap. Im planning to take calc 2 next semester; hopefully I'll do better
-awards since college acceptances: ap scholar w/distinction, gold medal for spanish (hs academic award for senior class, ~850 people)

what's wrong with bryn mawr?

where are you wanting to go?

what isn't wrong with Bryn Mawr

Anyway, you have a decent shot. Vassar transfer is notoriously tough. Try for Brown too.

Right now, I'm looking at Wesleyan and Vassar. Id like to try for Swarthmore, but its an impossible reach.

I'm looking for LACs near Philadelphia/New York City that have a journalism major and/or a strong alumni network in journalism (Bryn Mawr doesnt have either, unless you count its shared alumni network w/Haverford).

The positive aspects of my Bryn Mawr experience so far -everyone is accessible (from the professors to the president of the college), Bryn Mawr is not a party school, and I like writing for the Bryn Mawr/Haverford newspaper.

I picked Bryn Mawr over Vassar b/c Bryn Mawr seemed to have a much quieter campus- I don't drink or party. But now I realized that Id like to go to co-ed school for a more 'normal' environment, as long as the schools dominant culture doesnt entail drinking or partying.

I also get the feeling that Im used to working a lot harder than most people around me. My workload in high school was much more rigorous than at Bryn Mawr. I guess its what I make of it- # of classes, extracurriculars- but I dont feel challenged in my classes.

slipper1234, what has your experience with Bryn Mawr been?

If you get off your butt and get active in extracurriculars, I don't see why Swarthmore is an "impossible" reach -your GPA is fine. I am at Smith, which is less challenging than my high school, and therefore I want to transfer. What high school did you go to?

I think Wesleyan at least is not known for particularly hard-working students. But maybe you know more about Wesleyan than I do.

I haven't had any problems with the all-women environment at all, but after attending an event at UPenn, I really do think that the environment is unlike that of the 'real world.' I don't really think that all-women's college is empowering like some people say.
Another thing that bothers me is Bryn Mawr's relationship with Haverford. Both schools paint it as a rosy social/academic cooperation, which is very deceiving. The cross-registration works out well, but there are plenty of other flaws, i.e. Bryn Mawr girls complaining abt Haverford guys, Haverford girls hating on Bryn Mawr girls, some Haverford students being condescending towards Bryn Mawr students. This isn't the situation for everyone; friendships do exist, but I feel like those are rarer than the other cases. I take a class at Haverford right now and there is hostility between me and another girl who is condescending towards Bryn Mawr students. I just don't feel like having my intelligience insulted... it doesn't really bother me that the social cooperation is lacking, but I hate the bitterness involved. In my opinion, it would just be better for the two schools to be independent.

I went to Brooklyn Technical HS in NYC.

My best friend went to Haverford, he also thought the relationship/ competition/ rivalry/ condescending attitude/ whatever between Bryn Mawr and Haverford was ridiculous. Also he said the social scene was pretty poor, people "shush" people in the library and the campus doesnt sustain itself on the weekends. All secondary info though.
