If I knew then what I know now....

Calling all Georgetown students...... Freshman-Seniors........ Kindly answer this question... If I knew then what I know now (looking for practical, helpful, everyday things, that if done, can make a huge difference). ;)

good thread - a lot of feedback would be appreciated

Do you mean tips for going to school at Georgetown, or tips about applying to Georgetown?

tips about going to school in Georgetown

If I knew then what I know now....

I wouldn't have taken those last 4 shots. Really.

Um, what else...I would've gone to the Notre Dame basketball game last year where Roy Hibbert won on a dunk with no time left and they stormed the court (twice).

I would've tried to find a better paying job than DC Reads, or at least adjusted my schedule so I could've worked more days. Georgetown's an expensive place.

I would've taken someone other than David Edelstein for IR. The lectures are interesting, but his grading policies are steeeeep.

I would've skipped work and gone to the talk given by Viktor Yushchenko when he was here.

I would've worn sunscreen when going to the cherry blossom festival last year.

I would've saved up my money for a digital camera.

I would've gotten a cell phone contract with a company that actually exists/has stores in DC.

I would've remembered that whole "open contained law" thing.

I would've taken more of my crap back with me over Easter break last year. Spending $100 at UPS to send stuff back is annoying.

I would've dropped by the Career Center sooner. Apparently they're pretty useful.

I'm sure there's a few more...

I would have (fyi i'm a sophomore)...

Not brought a thousand quarters as a freshman-the laundry machines only take Gocards (you'll find out about those).

Found time to go to more than one basketball game this season

Taken about five times less stuff to school with me. Seriously, all the stuff in your room at home now, you're never going to use and only be annoyed with at school.

Brought more storage containers

Not stressed about ultimately unimportant things in my life like my freshman microecon midterm.

Done more research about good profs to take instead of signing up for classes primarily based on what time they were offered.

Taken classes on a bunch of different subjects instead of trying to take classes that all related to one thing.

Stood on the other side of Healy circle when Prince Charles visited so I could have shaken his hand.

Run into Nicole Kidman in Starbucks like all my friends when she was filming a movie in the neighborhood a few months ago.

Invested in a good umbrella and rainboots.

I'm sure i'll think of more things...

who would you say the best professors are at georgetown...and what courses do they teach?

omg nicole kidman..haha..if i told my biology teacher that she was in the georgetown area, he would freak out. he's from New Zealand and he's IN LOVEEEE with her...kinda strange actually.

Good post, sportula, thanks a bunch.

"I would've gotten a cell phone contract with a company that actually exists/has stores in DC."

what comp would that be?

and anything else, from anyone else?

Well, it's definitely NOT Alltel. Verizon is considered to be the best, although T-Mobil, Cingular, and most others are around. My phone generally works fine in terms of reception since Alltel just piggybacks on the Verizon network, but in terms of replacing it when it got stepped on...not so much.

Bump.....anyone else?

If i knew that I was going to get into Georgetown I wudnt have bothered writing all those essays and paying application fees for other colleges.

Good one... I definitely agree. If I knew that I was going to Georgetown I would have had a much less stressful past 8 months lol

My D is a freshman, but I'll chime in as a parent: Would have flown to DC from Florida and shipped boxes, taken large suitcases. Georgetown has a HUGE tent the first few days where you can buy just about everything you need, like bins, dorm frid, hangers, pillows, fans, lights, etc. We didn't realize this, so we bought everything here and drove up....really pointless. Would have been easier and cheaper to fly.

Also, she would have taken about half the stuff had she known better. You really don't need so much stuff!

Things she needed to buy that you'll for sure need: cold medicine, raincoat, heavy coat, Georgetown hoodies (she has three now - everyone wears them all the time) boots.

redr002, Awesome post- Extremely helpful since I was wondering how we were going to fit everything into the trunk of our car. When you say bins..... what size are best?

fairly large bins that fit under your bed hold a lot of stuff (the deep ones, not the shallow ones). My D has three or four large bins, but again, she brought way too much stuff! At the tent sale, they sold a few different sizes. They also sold the stacking drawer bins and the stacking open bins. The under the bed bins are better because floor space is at a premium in your room. As far as prices, they were really reasonable. The frig sold for maybe $10 more than we paid at home. The bins were close to the same price.

We did make a target run (it was somewhere near pentagon city-about a 1/2 hour drive), and let me tell you it was packed and running out of stuff. Target was out of hangers, for example, so we bought those at the tent sale on campus.

Also bring a laundry basket. My daughter has hers, and a shoe rack, in her closet. Also an over the door hanger rack with several hooks - this is used for your towel, jackets, robe, clothes, etc.

DC also has a container store on Wisconsin I think. Its kinda far away (too far to walk), but if you have a car, you can go there. Also there is a bed, bath and beyond.

If you won't have a car, don't fret. You'll be able to get pretty much everything you need between the tent sale and the local safeway (food, water, soda, medicines, etc).

Feel free to ask me any more questions, I'm happy to help.

I would have brought fewer long sleeve shirts- i didn't wear them even in the winter, i just wore more layers.

I would have brought fmore dressy clothes- I get dressed up more often then I thought I would and definitely want more skirts with me.

Don't bring a dorm phone- it's completely unnecessary.

I would have gotten a fake id early on.

I would have gotten season tickets to the basketball games.

Any good teachers/interesting classes someone could recommend in the SFS program...?

"the SFS program" is pretty broad - there's a pretty big number of classes out there. Check ratemyprofessors.com for info on teachers. For Political and Social Thought, I had Murphy and liked it alot. I had DeGioia's prosem, but I don't know that he's teaching it anymore. What major are you planning on doing?

I'm not so sure yet but I was leaning towards International Political Economy...
What year are you in at SFS? and how is ot going so far?
