<p>I'd tell her to read about Shirley Sagawa, '83, who is on the cover of the latest Smith Alumnae Quarterly. I haven't read the article yet, but it talks about how she founded AmeriCorps. I knew Shirley tangentially when I was at Smith. She was one of those women you just know are going to do great things. Shirley is an inspiration, and she'd make a great topic for an essay. </p>

<p>If my D were applying to Smith, I would tell her that the author of “The Night Circus”, the official HOT BOOK OF THE FALL 
was a Smith grad, class of 2000 </p>
<p>It’s not quite like founding Americorps, but you just never know where a Smithie will turn up!</p>
<p>The Night Circus was great! I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.</p>
<p>The book is going to be #2 on The New York Times fiction hardcover best seller’s list this coming Sunday.</p>
