The major that I want to transfer into is Economics, however, I will not have the prereq's done by the time the end of the Spring semester comes around to apply to transfer to the Economics program. Also, my GPA is not high enough to be sure of acceptance to the UCLA Econ program. So is there any way to change majors once already there, I know they say you can't but there has to be some way around, they can't just deny someone completely if that person is already at UCLA and wants to change majors.

lol...this may be completely stupid. but what if you declare a double major in econ and the original subject you applied to major in once you are there. then you remove the original major a quarter later or something.

although, they probably have a way around people doing that. lol. just my silly idea.

to be accepted INTO the economics major, regardless of a double major or switching your major completely, is what you need to be concerned about. since you will not complete the pre-req's, they have no reason to accept you.

at orientation, they will lead you in the right direction for switching your major. but switching into something that is impacted. in fact, people can only transfer as a pre-economics major.

they will change majors for people that want to switch to... let's say, Asian American Studies or Woman's Studies. Changing to Communications? Well, let's just say you need to take an extra year at UCLA just to see if you will be accepted into the Communications department.

usually if there is room in the major, then yea you can change, but if not, tough luck

just apply as you are right know once ur admitted switch..... once ur in you can do anything... the problem is getting in get it

Well, what if I wait one year, take all the classes necessary, and then switch the next year? Will they accept then? I mean, it doesnt matter when they accept me as long as I get it before I graduate right? Because I can take all the same classes that econ majors take anyway until I get there.

Changing from a non-impacted major to another non-impacted major is fairly simple. Changing from a non-impacted major to a very impacted and competitive major like econ is downright difficult. What major do you plan to apply as?

Well if this helps, I sent a letter to UCLA asking about designing a major

this was the response:

Hi ------,

For transfer admissions, you would apply to major that is closely linked
to what you would like to design your major in. If you are admitted to
UCLA and decide to enroll, then you can start the process of designing
your own major by working through the College Honors Program office.

Thank you,
UCLA Undergraduate Admissions & Relations with Schools

Economics doesn't accept anyone accepted to UCLA (as a transfer) from an outside department. Its a very impacted major, most prereq classes on campus have 250+ students.

To verify this info; go to the economics department website.

"they can't just deny someone completely if that person is already at UCLA and wants to change majors"

They most certainly can. What is it that's stopping you from improving your GPA and completing the requirements?

good luck man! it's really hard just because LA is alsready so overpopulated. I mean with Berkeley, according to a counselor.. it's a maybe, but LA is a different story. If you want to switch into a non impacted major, I bet you can.

Apply as Jewish Studies major. You are guaranteed* to be accepted.

*Not a guarantee
