If u are not in the top 10% of ur class is it an auto rejection from top 50 schools?

its in the question ^

my rank isn't too hot due to a bad freshman year...
its like around 100/741 that is top 13% which is why I'm freaking out.

obviously i know its not good enough for the top top schools but i just want to know more about how bad is 'really bad' for a class rank.

edit: ooh, and this is of a large competitive public school where i think 98% go on to four yr colleges or something? not private.

it really depends on a lot of factors, like are averages weighted? plus nothing is an auto-reject, you should throw in an application if you want to go there, no matter what CC people say

no it's not an auto-rejection.

i want to yell at you right now.

I think like 90% of the entering class at Harvard graduated in their top 10% in high school. So obviously it is not auto-rejection if you don't miss the top 10%.

You can look up this statistics for any school listed in US News, and most of them are even more lax (except like MIT or Caltech.)

I sure hope not...I applied to two top 50 colleges and I'm not in the top 25%.

that is literally the BIGGEST myth known to man!!!

I know loads...i mean LOADS of kids who are in top 30-25 percent and have gotten into schools like UMich, Emory, Vanderbilt, Rice, even USC and Berkeley, and UVa, etc. etc, from our school in GA.

Its a massive combination.

SAT Scores, Essays, ECs, Work Rigor, Recs. (No particular order)

Its not auto reject, but if you do look at the data; for top 30 schools; at least 80% are within top 10%.

And besides, not all top 10%'s are created equally. I've seen people in chance threads who are top 10% with a GPA < 3.0

Well...the answer is definately no for top 50 schools...but for top 25 schools...it's a different story. Most of the kids not in the top 10% of their class:
1. Go to a VERY competitive school that sends 5-15% of their grads to top 25 schools.
2. A urm...duh...
3. A needed athelete/other team person. (If the school needs a sax player for their band...they need a sax player). Important::::: If you play an odd istrument of sport...see if all of the people that do at the colleges you want to go to will be graduating in 1-2 years. This would help you overcome the non-10% us news problem.

Though...I am also a high schooler and only know from what i've seen/read.

and don't apply to a school becuase of its "top" ranking....a # 60 school may be better for YOU than a #30...something to think about

and no of course it is not an auto reject...where does this hogwash come from

^ try to get into the top 50 schools, and then tell us that you don't like it there and that you would prefer sth like #80 on the list.

A lot of the top colleges report in their Common Data Set filings that many admitted students don't have a high school class rank. Not all high schools rank.

I was saying DON"T jsut apply to a "top 50" school becuase its a "top 50 school"

some look at #s and ranking and not so much at the school- and I could tell you this, put an city kid in a location that is in the boondocks and no matter how much higher it is ranked, if they feel trapped on campus, is it "better" for that student?

that was my point

Got into Stanford and was on the cusp of the top 10% of my class. However, I went to a school that sends 5-15% of its grads to top 25 schools and I had basically everything else going for me IMO...so...yeah. Don't let it get you down, but certainly you have an idea where kids with your gpa and SAT score have been admitted to from your school.

citygirlsmom, thanks for replying!

i don't only look at the us news rankings, but I want to know more about the admissions criteria for top 50 schools, doesn't mean I'm not interested in a #80 school.
