If we TAG to 7 UC schools, are we OBLIGATED to apply to all of them in November?

To give myself a sense of firm security, I'm tempted to TAG to all of them on the September TAG Application. Assuming that, say, UC Merced accepts my TAG, does this mean I HAVE to apply to Merced in November on the regular UC Application? The reason I ask is because I don't want to have to pay $60 just for each school. I really only want apply to like 4-5 UCs. Can you help me?

Will the other UCs know that I didn't apply to Merced even though I TAGged to them, and if so would this hurt my chances?

it doesnt make sense to TAG to them if ur not going to apply to them, but no it wont hurt your chances.

Honestly I know you’re worried about at least getting in somewhere. I applied to UCSC just to be sure lol. Although, no u dont have to TAG all those extra ones, and no u dont have to apply to them after you’ve TAGGED them.

In all earnestness, you should just apply/TAG to the schools you like - those 4 or 5 that you’re actually planning on applying to. If you TAG Merced, for example, and don’t apply there, you automatically won’t send an application there…and all that extra TAG work will be pointless lol.

why doesn’t it make sense? the TAG application is free and it lets you know whether you are qualified for those schools before you have to even start on our November application. Don’t you think this is a way of saving money? if for example UCI and UC Merced both accept you through TAG, you don’t have to pay $60 to apply to UC Merced in November. And now I learned through you guys that we won’t be penalized for doing this (UCI would never know that we didn’t apply to UC merced, as you say).

emisinclair9 – thanks, Yeah UCSC is one I’ll probably apply to as well. I’d take them over Merced any day haha.

Okay, here’s the thing. If you TAG you still do apply to the schools in November, and yes, you do have to pay the $60 fee for each school you apply to.

You can’t just TAG Merced, apply, and not pay. However, you can TAG to gauge your chance of being admitted, then not apply to it in November (or apply if u so choose), and then depending on if you apply, will have to or will not have to pay the $60.

So just because you TAG and get in doesn’t mean you have to officially apply (and pay) in November, right?

@ aninstance: lol yes and no haha. If you TAG and it is accepted, it means that you’re guaranteed admission if you apply. If you don’t apply after you TAG, you were never really admitted in the first place.

But I get your question, and the answer is you’re right. You do not have to apply just because you TAG.

that’s an interesting idea that i think i’ll recommend to my sister (who’s hopefully will apply to some UCs this year)

my question to you is when do the universities let you know if you’re accepted to TAG or not? i assume it’s before november lol.

Unfortunately, they don’t have to let you know before November. Davis, for example, says they will let you know by November 15 at the latest. I’m not sure of the others, though.

Thanks peeps. Yea all UCs have until Nov 15th to get back to us regarding our TAG decisions.

Just to note, UCSD TAG didn’t come out until February this last year. That’s when I found out my TAG was accepted.

I know Davis will let you know this semester though.

@emilsinclair9 no way, really. That is really late.

I promise you. I wrote it down lol. UCSD did not send me my TAG acceptance until February 7th.

Others got it up to a week or 2 before me - but at earliest mid-January. I don’t know if UCSD has changed their policies since last year, but that’s how it was.

Davis let me know in late October or early November. If you guys want me to check, I have the e-mail from back then somewhere in my files lol.

That’s okay. It just gives people a little more anxiety than normal. Once you sent the application, it is in the hand of God now. lol

Realistically speaking, it’s first in the hands of student admission office workers sorting through the objective parts like making sure you have the units cleared and w.e. prereqs needed.

Then it’s in the hands of the admissions committee…at which point, your fate will be decided.

I only know of this because UCLA rejected me at first, I called and called, and then eventually they realized that they had misread my transcript…they thought I was missing a prereq. I was luckily admitted 2 days later.

Moral of the story: Even if u guys don’t get in, call and press them. People make mistakes.

@emilsinclair9. good life lesson, but wouldn’t they be annoyed if you call too much? especially if you know why you didn’t get accepted. hahaha
I should add one more:

Be very polite when call or email them! Honey is always better than chili. I emailed UCSD representatives a couple times this week, I wrote very politely and they replied back very quickly and very informative.

@ Ktran: Yes, being polite was critical for me as well…especially since I was unsure about why I was rejected. lol I didn’t know why they rejected me actually. I called twice, both times I was told, “Psych is very competitive, so and so many applicants this year, etc”. Both times the attendants neglected to do me a favor and check out my transcript. It wasn’t like I had a 4.0 either…I had a 3.76. I know that GPA isn’t stellar, and I should never have assumed I was getting in…but I mean, I had a 4.0 in the prereqs and had taken 8 psych classes lol!

On the 3rd attempt, I got a different guy on the phone. He was extremely helpful, pulled up my transcript, and figured out where things went wrong.
