On the whole I thought it was pretty good. The writers kept closer to the events in the book rather than rewriting which usually ends badly. I especially liked the wedding scene which I thought was very well acted. I still miss the literary references Diana put in the books which are often witty. Claire’s jokingly referring to herself as a succubus for example, a word which fit very well with the way the turtle soup scene was originally written in the book
I don’t remember much about the books at this point. I thought the German woman threw Jaime off the boat with a raft? But it did seem a little slow.
I do remember that they let Marsali wear the special dress that was hanging in the priest’s house and that Mamacita kept referring to Claire as a “cow” in the book. Since we have a more slender Claire I guess they had to leave that out!
I don’t remember the ants but I wonder why Claire didn’t try to find out what was in the green goo that was put on her legs. She’d usually be all over that sort of info.
@greenwitch - she did call her a fat cow.
I have no recollection at all of this part of the books, so it was okay with me. I did enjoy the aside where one fellow said to the other “MacDubh’s wife does show up in the strangest places” or words to that effect.
I also think that “Mr. Willoughby” is being treated with much more respect and dignity than he was in the books.
I liked Ep 12.
Spoliers…
The “blood bath” was a little too True-Blood -ish, but beyond that, I thought it was well done.
The eyes and facial expressions between Lord John, Jamie and Claire when they meet up are amazing.
DH said it was his favorite episode. I figured they weren’t going to make Geillis obese as in the novel. Quite the opposite, in fact.
I liked it. Catriona did a good job of showing jealousy. It was a pleasant episode.
I think I have to watch the finale again…first impression, didn’t like it much. Didn’t care for the extended sex scene on the ship, didn’t care for some camera/editing choices.
Sometimes I feel like that, then I re-watch and see things I missed and it clicks better.
I agree about watching it again.
Nice little interview with Sam and Catriona regarding filming the finale.

The finale had some changes from the book. Wasn’t there a crocodile? And wasn’t Jaime shot?
Her flashback to Joe Abernathy and the skull seemed a bit rushed too. I thought that the slave she bought turns out to be Joe Abernathy’s ancestor and that he helped them out more at the end. Those ties weren’t tightly drawn. And the storm seemed to come out of nowhere as a rather weak dramatic device.
I loved the last scene at the beach. The beach and the island scenes were shot in Cape Town, SA.
Being a bit of a Jamaicaphile, I’d really hoped they’d shoot it there. SA does not look like Jamaica. But I get why they did it as they did.
Agree on the storm - we have Jamie saying “it’ll be nice to cool off” when they hear thunder and then suddenly we’re in Descent into the Maelstrom. It was pretty abrupt. That was one of the weird edits that struck me.
I might have to re-read, have forgotten what was from the book and what was not.
Seeing as they only had an hour for the finale, I don’t see how they possibly could have done it differently. We were supposed to intuit that time had passed between "it’ll be nice to cool off " and the Maelstrom because they had clearly had time to dress and get everyone in place for those scenes. I had some issues with the finale, but that wasn’t one of them. They just didn’t have the luxury of time for that.
Before I say more, I also need to re-read.
I agree about the sex scene. I liked reading it more than watching it. It’s so romantic and endearing to read Jaime saying all those things, but just seemed silly hearing it. I loved The scene with Lord John. Although he’s not physically LJG, he does have the essence of him, I think. His eyes light up so well when he looks at Jaime. I also loved the end at the beach. All in all a solid season for me, I liked it better than season 2. The only major complaint was how they screwed up one of my top favorite scenes, the reunion.
I really like Lord John Grey in this series! It will be great if they do the LJG mysteries as a spin off.
I really DON’T like the LJG in the series. He’s just not at all like the character in the books, and not only in appearance, IMHO.
I don’t remember this part of the books much at all, but I object to their glamorizing Geilis.
II just read it’s been renewed for 2 more seasons after this next one (through book 5 then, unless they start splitting or combining books which has not been ruled out).
Season 4 is to premiere in November.
Are we all ready?! Can’t wait!
Wow, I didn’t realize it started tonight!
8:00 EST
I’m a late to the show fan - two more episodes and I’ll be caught up! But then I’ll be waiting a week between . . .
