If you have a weak GPA, such as a 3.0, which you leave off your resume out of shame, and are getting interviews for internships and entry-level work, what are the hiring managers and/or HR individuals saying to themselves when they schedule the interview? Would any of the below apply?

I.) "Okay, if he's good-looking and the strong GPA kids are all total goobers, we'll give him a shot" (since the human mind subconsciously favors good-looking people by an order of magnitude over uggos, (doubly so for female PR reps who judge males mostly by their appearance, and of course dismiss ugly girls as losers automatically))

II.) "I feel sorry for this kid, he probably has a learning disability, maybe we can fill some sort of AA quota by hiring him?"

III.) "This person appears to have left their GPA off their resume. I will schedule an interview with them, and try to feel them out in order to figure out what their GPA was."

IV.) "I am lazy and schedule interviews for the first X number of resumes I see that are legible."

(flash forward to the day of interview) "Good god! His GPA isn't on his resume (or weak GPA is on the resume)! Oh well, it's too late to cancel, let's get this over with, I'm going to feel like a Rhodes Scholar when I interview this dullard, if he can even manage to string together a sentence, ha!"

IOW: In a world where GPA is king, is it possible to be marred by a weak GPA even after getting the interview?

I’m not too sure, but in my opinion. If you don’t put your GPA on and they want to know. They’ll just ask you. I also don’t think that a GPA like a 3.0 would flash learning disability.

Just in my opinion… If you make it to the interview you may have something they are interested in. If you have a 3.0 (which isn’t the worst GPA ever… unless you’re applying for the BEST jobs in whatever field), my best suggestion would be explain why it isn’t a little higher. did you maybe focus on all the classes for your major and not really apply yourself in the core classes? GPAs are important, but I think the other aspects of your interview are probably going to be important as well.

There are no legit excuses like this in real life. Everyone on the internet with a weak GPA has something very convincing to blame, such as having cancer or working full time. In real life, the reasons are “not caring enough”, “not being prepared”, “being high”, “dolt professors who grade everything stupidly hard which you absent-mindedly signed up for”, etc, but with the most emphasis on the first one. Sure, you can lie, but it’s hard to sound convincing when the stake is something so frivolous as GPA (which is a paradox, because GPA is King).

“Whistleblower1 has not made any friends yet”

Is that the story of your life brah?

Btw Kayleigh_9109, ignore this moron. He’s one of those engineering majors (if that) that goes around tooting his horn and expects everyone to suck his knee cap because he’s an engineering major (if he actually is one)

@ Whistle: What I want to know is what private, grade-inflating college you call your alma matter, because here 3.0 is the university average. I realize that’s pretty dull by big 4 standards, but we also send more students to the big 4 than any other uni.

Folks, I haven’t read what Whistleblower1 said in post number one since he was added to my ignore list, but I would bet it was annoying, infantile and probably immature and improper. Am I far off the mark? I would suggest simply adding him and whistleblower2 to your ignore list. Sadly, he will probably create a new name ,but we can keep ignoring him.

He was talking something about what people who interview applicants to accounting firms think when they talk to a candidate with a low GPA, and he implied that female interviewers are likely to favor handsome male applicants. Oh, and he makes fun of people with disabilities too for some stupid reason. I think I’ll be taking your advice.

I just wonder what kind of GPA he has himself. When a person always speaks about something, sometimes it means that he/she has a problem with it. :)

If you are applying for a job in a big company, a big 4, become a small fish in the ocean, working in a cubicle in some office and are known merely by a number - then yes, GPA is 100% what gets you that job.

If you are applying for a job in a small, local company (less than say, 250), then GPA means nothing - It’s all about your attitude and personality. I worked at a company last year (in the produce industry - I did some accounting work and operations/inventory work) where one guy started at minimum wage 25 years early as a forklift driver, worked his way up, and is now the top salesman making over 150k per year and is also a partial owner in the company.

@ binks09: It’s always great to hear a story like that! I must admit that I am often unsure about if I should try to get a job in a well-known company that will look good on my resume or just go for something smaller where I can really be a dynamic part of the team and enjoy my job more and possibly even have more exposure to the field.

binks is completely wrong about GPA and the Big Four and similar organizations. GPA gets you into the interview, after that it’s irrelevant. The issue is the work is not that complicated(at least for the first few years after which most people are going to quit anyway). GPA is the main method they use to screen people out for interviews. After that it’s irrelevant. If anyone with a 3.0 or above is competent enough to do the work and they only interview those with 3.5 or above, then good looking people with a 3.5 are going to have a much better chance than the ugly 4.0’s.

Dawgie, do interviewers enter interviews with weak-GPA candidates with a condescending tone? As a person with a strong GPA, do they just lob you softball questions and just stare at you in awe?

LOL, I was 3.68 at the time interviewing for Big 4 so it wasn’t spectacular. It was mainly behavioral stuff. I’m sure if I had a 3.1 and somehow sneaked by they would question my technical skills.
