If you could start over from the start as a freshman of college what would you do different?

I will be starting college in January hopefully at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

I want to set myself up perfectly and not make foolish mistakes. The best way to do that is learn from other people's experiences. Please feel free to share your academic/social life experiences at your respective university.

Looking forward to reading the responses! :)

I would hang out with 2-3 different groups of friends instead of just one.

Get involved in more research as an undergrad.

Be more assertive and focus less on the feelings of others.

Why would I hang out with 2-3 different groups of friends instead of just one? For one thing, with EVERY freshman being new, it’s easy to deceive yourself into thinking that you have more in common with some people than you really do. After a few weeks, you might decide that you’d rather hang out with a different crowd. Making the transition is a lot easier if you’ve been hanging out with someone else from the beginning.

Actually make time to attend office hours instead of staring at the computer screen waiting for an answer to appear in my mind.
