This is seriously what my parents are telling me.

I have a C in AP Economics right now, and my grade is only going down. I don't understand ANYTHING in the class. No matter how many times my teacher explains stuff to me, it just doesn't click. I've gotten Ds and Es on all the latest tests and quizzes, and the material is only getting more complex and building upon what we've already learned. We got this huge quarter exam review packet and I couldn't answer a single question on there.

My parents are saying it's better to stay through the class and fail it. But seriously, I can foresee myself continually earning Cs and Ds. It's just miserable for me to go through the class because it's like hearing my teacher lecture in Greek. Everyone in the class does so much better than me.

My parents think I'm a freaking failure because of my inability to do well in this class. This is totally unfair of them to say because I've taken many challenging classes and gotten As in them, and I'm getting As in all my classes right now as well (excluding AP Economics, of course). Their ridiculous argument is that if I can't do well in AP Economics, I'm not going to be able to do ANYTHING. What the heck? Like I can't go through life without having succeeded in an Economics class? (I'm not planning on majoring in Economics) Not everyone is good at everything, and I've told them that, but they still think I'm a horrible person for doing badly in this one class. I'm good at English class, and I'm acing English class. I'm great at French, I'm doing great in that class as well.

I don't know what to do. I need my parents' permission to drop this class, and they're totally against it and get really angry when I bring it up. I feel like crying when I think about this class because it's so miserable for me and I just can't understand anything, while everyone else around me is acing the tests and quizzes. It's not like my guidance counselor or teacher will support my decision to drop the class either.

Ugh... what should I do? Just get Ds in this class for the rest of the year? :/
How am I supposed to convince my parents to let me drop this class? I can't take it anymore! It's not I've given up "too easily", I've tried sticking through this class for an entire marking period to see if it would get any better, and it hasn't.

Your parents are saying you’ll be a complete failure if you can do well in this one class? Wow. Maybe get your GC to talk to them. Either she’ll convince them, or realize how crazy they are and let you drop without their permission.

EDIT: Missed the part where your GC doesn’t want you to drop either. Is there any other adult you could talk to about this?

@matok- Yep, they give out E’s. The worst I could possibly get is a D though. E’s are like impossible to get, unless you get 0s on everything.

@Michael2010- My GC won’t help, because she’s crazier than my parents are, lol. I don’t really know who else I could talk to this about, maybe my teacher would be understanding but I feel really mean going up to her and telling her I don’t want to be in her class anymore. But um, the only adults that would be involved in this process are my teacher, my guidance counselor, and my parents.

I think the teacher would probably be ok with letting you drop if she can tell that you’re really trying and doing poorly anyway. Have you been asking for help after class when you didn’t understand something?

Yeah, I have. And you’re probably right! I’ll talk to her about it tomorrow then. I just have to get this over with soon and find a way to convince my parents today, because I want to drop it before the end of the marking period, which ends on Friday. :/

^I don’t think it’s that simple. I read the textbook for Econ and everything seems straightforward and comprehensible. Yet the tests/quizzes/classwork/homework are so much more complicated than what is presented in the textbook, and I don’t know how to approach them.

I assume sqdwfe is from Michigan. I don’t know of any other states which use Es.

None of us can help convince your parents. However if your school was anything like mine, they will not contact your parents, they will not ask your parents, there’s no parental involvement. Your parents may see in the future that you’re not in it on the report card, but if you’re going to get a D, drop it, let your parents be mad at you for a little while, and get over it.

I am a returning adult student. I graduated 35 years earlier. I have now been in the local tech college for almost 2 years. This semester is the hardest. I have only been iin 1 class per semester, now I am in 4 this semester. I have been a 3.3 student or higher, twice on the Dean’s list for 3.75+ and last fall with a 4.0! I am losing it now. Economics is going to bring it down. I am with you. I just don’t get it. everyone else seems to be getting it. Even my kids get it! I will NEVER USE this course for what I intend to do, but I have to take it. I am looking for a tutor. However, this class is in it’s 5th week. I thought I would eventually get it. I no longer think so. What else can I do?

Michigan does use E’s more than any other state, but outside of MI, they’re used on a sort of school-to-school basis. My cousin’s HS in Maryland uses E to mean F.
