If you get a congressional nomination what are your chances for acceptance?

I am just wondering if you have a generally good file and a congressional nomination, are you pretty much in?

No, but your chances are much better than if you did not receive a nomination. Ann, what are the statistics for those who’ve been nominated versus applied? Seems I recall about 13,000 apply, around 4,000 get nominations, and 1,200 receive appointments, correct me if I’m wrong.

Each year there are around 300-400 “triple-qualified candidates with a nomination” who did not receive an appointment.

And what happens to those people?

On another note, I have heard that many of the people who are qualified but don’t get in are in highly competitive districts - There are people who are not as qualified but get in because their district has many vacanices?

Those who don’t receive an appointment do not attend West Point. Some (most?) are offered the chance at an ROTC scholarship which many accept.

Yes, all Academies are required by law to have a representative cross-section of the country and some states and/or districts are more competitive than others. If one was trying to get into West Point simply on this premise, they might move to a state and/or district that was less competitive. However, they must still meet the standards of admission.

My son recently received a congressional nomination to West Point. He is on cloud 9. We understand that this does not mean acceptance. But we are new to the process and wondered what next? His application package is complete. Is there something we can do to improve his chances of getting accepted? Write a letter or phone admissions? It is his dream to go to West Point.

Mdfather: Congratulations to your son! If his file is complete, and he does not have a LOA there really is nothing more your son can do except update his file if he has anything to add, stay healthy, and wait…

Best of luck

Mdfather - In addition, your son can visit West Point!
He and his parents are eligible for a candidate visit where he can get a tour, go to class and sit with an admissions officer for a review of his file.

Your son should also update his file, don’t forget to send 7th semester transcripts and any signigificant awards and leadership (like team captain or Eagle Scout) to his Regional commander in the admissions office.

Just wanted to inform this forum that I have received an offer of admission to West Point! Thanks to everyone for the great information and encouragement throughout the long application process. See you in Beast!

Congratulations! :)
