If you go/went to Brown

I’m seriously considered applying early and I just want to hear about your experience there. Here are some of the things I want to know more about, but any information would be much appreciated.

 1. How would you describe the type of people at the school?
 2. Is there a big party drinking scene?
 3. How is the food?
 4. How are the dorms?
 5. What is your overall feeling of the school?

How would you describe the type of people at the school?
In general, there are many many different types of people. You can find about any type of person here. Diverse(in more than the racial sense).

Is there a big party drinking scene?
It's as big or as small as you yourself want to make it. It's easy to find the party drinking scene and enjoy it and it's also easy to just not participate and still have an active social life.

How is the food?
It's cafeteria food. What do you expect?

How are the dorms?
Depends who you're comparing us against. Against most universities in the nation: Excellent. The rooms are spacious compared to most universities, though there are some schools that do do better.

What is your overall feeling of the school?
Love it. Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

justbreathe stole my answers for 1 and 2

3 food is pretty good on the whole. There are certain dishes that are absolutely horrible, but I'm almost always satisfied when I'm finsihed.

4 Dorms are definitely bigger than at comprable schools, but in my opinion, not as "nice" looking.

5 I always leave on the last day and come back on the first. My vacations are often spent counting down the days until I can go back. Hell, I spent last summer in providence and I'm doing it again this year.

See above. :p It's a really difficult to question to answer as everyone is so different. Brown is stereotyped as a hippie school, and, coincidentally enough, my roommate and all of her friends were hippies, but they were the only ones I encountered!

Yes, I think so. It seems/seemed big to me because I really have nothing but high school to compare it to, and I'll admit that I was a bit shocked! But I'm sure it's nowhere near as big as at a large public school. Parties are easily accessible, and in some situations drinking can be encouraged, but you can just as easily avoid these types of people/parties and have a great sober (or more responsibly alcoholic...) evening.

Fine. People like to rag on it, but it's a hell of a lot better than high school cafeteria food - and worse than your mom/dad's cooking. Such is life. I still managed to gain weight on it, of course; no worries there.

Like others have said, I think they're more spacious, especially compared to some dorms at my state's universities that I've seen. They're not particularly attractive or well-kempt, though, despite their spaciousness. Nothing to write home about (well, I probably did, because I had a cool window seat).

I like it. I don't love it, which is really hard for me to admit since I was absolutely crazy about it while applying. I think it's a more because of the fact that I expected the general atmosphere to be a bit nerdier/more academic (don't get me wrong - there are plenty of people like this, but there are also plenty of people who fit your typical college stereotype). I do sometimes wonder if I would've enjoyed myself better at another college; there's that nagging 'what if?' But, at the end of the day, I would never say that I dislike Brown. I've enjoyed my time here, my classes have been good, and I like being surrounded by mostly intelligent yet laid-back people.
