I’m pretty undecided about whether want to ED Brown or Columbia, but from what I’ve heard, the social life at Brown seems to be a main selling point for me. So some Q’s:

1) In terms of night life, do most people who want to have fun go out in to providence, party on campus, or just chill with a group of friends? (And yes, fun = drinking.)

2) Brown seems to be the most hippieful of the Ivies, but how much of that is just hype, and how much is really true? Are over 50% of my classmates going to be pot smoking pacifists? Or will there just be a larger percentage of them than at other Ivies?

3) In the same vain, Brown is said to be very uncompetitive and just overall a chill place. How much is this true?

4) How social would a big dorm like Keeney (seems to be the biggest) be? If I’m sitting in a lounge chair is the guy next to me going to invite me to a suite party?

There’s no need to go out to Providence. Thayer and Wickenden Streets are much more popular places people go to for bars and whatnot, and a lot of people do their partying without straying from Campus.

It’s most likely a larger percentage than the other Ivies but, trust me, it’s not going to be a series of communes where people greet you and pass out vegan fliers with hand and hold their joints with their other. It’s not as big of a deal as you’d think.

Uncompetitive is the wrong word. It’s just not COMpetitive. It’s not like people don’t care about grades and just go around getting high. There’s just not a cutthroat atmosphere overwhelming everyone.

I’m in a section of Keeney right now. It’s very possible that the guy sitting next to you in a lounge chair will invite you to a party, but isn’t it like that everywhere? It’s just a lot of people the same age living together. And a lot is a relative term. You don’t really feel lost, although you won’t know everyone in the building.

They’re fine. In my limited experience (been here a week now), I’ve never run into a situation where a person is either waiting to use the toilet or waiting to use the shower. The showers could be hidden better, I suppose, but it’s not like it’s just one large cell that everyone showers together in…

most people at Brown don’t stray from campus too much, and if they do it’s usually only to the mall or something. drinking is pretty much the same, people stay in the bubble. unfortunate.

If you’re staying in a frat house, be ready to live with the most disgusting bathrooms you have seen in your life. And yes I mean worse than rat bathrooms. And rats don’t have bathrooms. They just **** wherever they can. That’s what I mean.
