Texas has to be included. It has two university systems with multi-$billion endowments among the top 10 (more than any other state) and 2 very strong publics, as well as respected, but lower tier publics like UTD and Houston. It also has extremely strong medical schools that are completely stand alone from its universities like UT Southwestern and Baylor COM (not really associated with the private undergrad school)

California
Virginia
Michigan
North Carolina
Texas
Wisconsin
Pennsylvania and Florida
Gerorgia, Ohio, Illinois
Conn and NY

I didn't say UC schools weren't prestigious. People who need to know understand what they are. But except for Berkeley and maybe UCLA, they are not as well regarded on the east coast as many people on the west coast seem to think they are. It's not a matter of quality, USNWR rankings, or any other supporting information anyone cares to spout about it, it's simply a lack of familiarity with those schools. The broad assumption that the UC system is universally recognized is a faulty one.

This is a two way street. People out west don't regard Virginia as highly as people out east do...likewise few would mention VT as a solid school (on the west coast).

wow, talk about complete ignorance of Wisconsin and Illinois......

What good public schools do those two states have besides the state flagships?
