If you have transfer credits.. Is GPA Cumulative?

When applying to Med School, are your GPA's from all Universities that you have attended classes accumulated to form an overall #? I am guessing this is how it works because it would seem inaccurate if it was only from the University you graduated.

Also, if I am going to graduate as a Mechanical Engineer from UW Madison, will it be easier for me to get in their Med School than someone who didn't? (As long as I have good stats)

Thanks

All grades from all courses at any institution are compiled for you AMCAS GPA, including any classes taken while in high school in a dual enrollment type of deal.

As for whether your chances will be better applying to the med school that corresponds to your undergrad school, I wouldn’t count on it. You should be applying to many schools when the time comes, and you shouldn’t be putting your eggs in any single med school’s basket until you have the acceptance letter in your hand.

Some may wish to argue that you have a worse chance since just about every pre med at UW M will apply there, that it puts you at a disadvantage, but I don’t have the credibility or data to verify this.

Should you apply there? Definitely. But you won’t be able to get away with lesser GPA/MCAT/Extracurriculars just because you went there for undergrad.
