UW Madison Med School feasible?

Hey guys,

I was hoping you could provide some insight for me. I am a current undergrad at UW Madison, and changed majors from engineering to International Studies(didn't see myself in engineering and always enjoyed poli sci/language classes) and will hopefully have a 3.4-3.5 gpa upon graduation. After leaving engineering, my gpa has risen from a 3.0 to around a 3.2 and I have about a year and a half to go, hence my estimate. My science GPA is hovering at about a 3.0, and could be around a 2.8 depending on how O-chem goes(hope to offset it with Biochem, but might not happen) I am volunteering at the UW hospital this year, but other than some retail sales experience in high school, that is my only EC. I have not taken the MCAT yet, so I won't even try to guess what my score on that will be but am hoping for low 30's with studying. With these stats is my chance of getting in realistic(also considering I am a resident of WI and will have graduated with BS from their undergrad)?

I have hunted the forums but have not found a specific case like this, I know this type of thing gets asked quite often and appologize in advance if the forum members are tired of seeing these threads.

Thanks,

You need to go to the library and look up UW’s SOM stats in the MSAR [Medical School Admission Requirements]. (Or you could try the USNews site–but I’m almost sure the admission data is subscription only.) It will tell you what the MCAT and GPAs are for last year’s entering class. The MSAR will distinguish between in-state and OOS applicants’ data.

You should also talk with the pre-med advising at UW. The advising office ought to have a good feel for your chances at the SOM.

But with a sub 3.0 sGPA, I’d suspect your chances are poor. (In general, med schools expect sGPAs to be around the same as your cumulative GPA–or around 3.5.)

Agree with WOWmom’s overall opinion.

You will need to apply broadly including DO schools and don’t discount MCOW- it has very large class sizes.

Good luck!
