you won't get an interview, right? Does that hurt your chances or anything? It seems like submitting the application after December 10 helps in two ways--avoiding having to ace an interview and giving you more time on application, no?

Also deprives you of chance to ace the interview and makes you seem less interested in the school.

I wouldn’t say that it really hurts your application any to not have an interview. (of course interviews really don’t ever hurt it either) I mean I got in and never even asked for an interview. (don’t think I would have been able to get one though being from NM)

SirGecko, you’re from New Mexico?

So am I! high five

Which high school did you go to?

ok I see, thanks

high five-o-five (get it?)

Anyway I went to La Cueva, how about you?

Very nice- I’ll have to use that sometime…

I go to Academy. What year are you at Duke?

I guess you of all people could give me the best assessment of the weather in NC as well :)

The Academy is cool. I really like the pool.

I’m a junior and an engineer. As for the weather, its actually really nice most of the time when school is in session. Right when the semester starts it is hot as hell and humid but it cools off in September. So for those first few weeks the weather is pretty bad. (as you know Albuquerque hot is much nicer than most places hot, oh how I love living in the high desert) It doesn’t rain that much but typically around late November or early December there will be a few torrential downpours. Winter can be cold on some days and in the early morning (I only know that because of NROTC making me get up early in the am to go PT) but in general the winters aren’t that cold. Spring is really nice, there are flowering plants all over the place and it doesn’t really get as hot as it was at the beginning of the year till after everyone leaves for the summer.

You don’t have to submit the entire application to be scheduled for an interview, just the supplemental. It’s not much to fill out, so it might indicate lack of interest if you can’t get it done by Dec. 10.

Doesn’t sound too bad at all. Thanks for answering so thoroughly!

In my opinion, I really don’t think Duke will penalize you for not applying early enough to get an interview. They have an application deadline of early January, so I don’t see how they would think you show lack of interest by not applying before then. Don’t purposely delay just to avoid an interview, and if you are offered one, I would definitely recommend you do it. That might show some lack of interest unless you have a good excuse (like the distance is too far to travel, etc.) Interviews are not critical in the application process, so if you don’t get one, don’t fret. And they aren’t meant to be stressful! I’m not certain, but I believe there’s even a chance you can still get an interview if you apply after the Dec. 10th deadline–it really depends on if there are alumni in your area to give interviews, etc. The deadline for the interview evaluations (from the interviewer) to be sent back to Duke is usually in February, so there is plenty of time. For those who met the deadline, don’t worry if you don’t get called for an interview until January. It takes some time for the alumni to get the assignments. Good luck.

I applied before 12/10, didn’t get an interview, got into Duke. And my stats weren’t all that great - pretty average for my class, I think.

I applied to Duke after December 10, more like around Christmas, because I wasn’t planning on applying anywhere else if I got into my early school. (It let me know 12/15). I got in and got an interview from Duke despite me sending it in “late”, but I did send it in sometime in 2006.

I would say interviews are not entirely important. My sister and her friend both didn’t get interviews to Duke, and their one friend that did rubbed it in their face.

They got in, he didn’t.

Not that interviews don’t help. But if it comes down to writing a better essay (with the extra time) or getting an interview, it is my belief that the former is more important.
