If i were to be rejected or deferred from Swarthmore ED, what would be my chances of getting into Amherst RD. Would it not even be worth applying to?

I don't think anyone can give any kind of answer without knowing something about you!

I'm applying to mostly small liberal arts colleges, except for UChicago (and Northwestern and WashU's education programs depending on what happens with early stuff).

You have the stats to get into any of the schools you listed. That said, all the schools are a crapshoot. Getting rejected or accepted at one will not make any difference in the acceptance or rejection decision at another. Amherst has no interviews, so your essays are crucial. Work hard on them, show who you are and hope they happen to need a Field Hockey, piano playing future English teacher in the class that year. Good luck!

People get rejected at Swarthmore and accepted at Amherst or accepted at Swarthmore and rejected at Amherst all the time. I would not say that admissions is a crapshoot, but it's an imperfect science.

I wouldn't sweat it. You look like a very solid candidate. Very solid candidates with good applications have a good shot at early decision acceptances.

Think positive!

it's now all down to your essay and your teachers' recommendations - and if get deferred or rejected at swarthmore ED, there's probably something wrong with either of these two, and you'll need to work that out before you send your ED application.

That's my story. Swarthmore ED reject and accepted at Amherst.

Your stats are great!
You have a great chance of getting into Swarthmore early. Just statistically speaking, as of 2005 USnews stats, Swarthmore's ED acceptance rate was 45%. Yet, despite great stats, RD chances for LAC's like Amherst depend on the idiosyncracies/hooks/attributes you bring to their community given those they have already "covered" through their early admissions.
Good luck!

Have you contacted the Amherst crew coach? It's club, not varsity, but being a cox might really help with admissions (certainly more than at Swat, where I don't think they even have crew). The nice thing about being a female cox is that you would be doubly valuable as you could cox for the women or the men.

Of course, even if you don't plan to do crew in college, being a cox shows leadership, organization, and collaborative abilities. If you don't get what you want at Swat, thinking through and using the coxing for Amherst might be a great way to reimage yourself and get a great fresh start with the application process. It's always nice not to feel stale and discouraged.

Good luck. Great schools!
