IGECT Question - Transfer to UCR

Question re: how the IGECT works.

I finished fall semester at SJSU and have since completed Spring and summer at Pasadena City College. Will be attending PCC for fall as well then seeking transfer. I will complete IGECT in fall. One of the schools I am applying to is UCR - for a major (Psych) in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The UC Admissions web site states that IGECT is recommended for transfer to that School & does not note (like other schools) that additional coursework is required. However, if I just look at the major itself, the math requirement listed is different than the one I completed for IGECT (I took a Stats class instead of Math 4). So my question is - if the UC Admissions website says that for the UCR school I am applying to IGECT is ok, but the major itself lists a different math course than the one I took for IGECT, am I screwed? Or is the Math course listed separately from IGECT only for folks seeking to meet gen ed reqs outside of completing IGECT? UCR is the only UC I’m applying to where there is this inconsistency. Hope this makes sense. Thanks

If the major requires a more specific or more advanced course than needed as part of IGETC or general education requirements, you need to take that more specific or more advanced course in order to graduate. It is at the discretion of the UC and department whether you can be admitted without taking it beforehand, but even if you can be admitted without it, you will need to take it some time before graduation.

Specifically, it looks like UCR psychology requires a precalculus or calculus course, while IGETC allows a broader range of math courses to fulfill its math area.

Thanks. The stats class is transferrable as meeting the math requirement - but I agree with you that at some point the more specific math class will need to be completed. My question is more re: admissions and whether I’ll get screened out based on meeting the IGETC math requirement at time of application but not the specific math class listed for the major, or whether saying IGETC is accepted means I’m good to go for application and TAG purposes and need only worry about the specific math class later (I’d probably do it next Summer).

Looks like the ASSIST.org page for transfer to UCR psychology says that “Effective fall 2018, students must have completed a course equivalent to UCR’s MATH 5, 9A, or 22 to be considered for admission to the major.”

Since you will be applying this year, will you be able to complete a qualifying math course this year? (Ask UCR directly if it is needed by fall or if completion in spring is ok.)
