IGETC certified... missing...

i'm a transfer student from OCC. my counselor at occ never said anything about my foreign language requirements but i thought i completed it. i only took 1 semester of foreign language at OCC and in HS i took 2 years of spanish. So what class do I have to take at UCI? is foreign lang hard at uci?

Your two years of HS should cover the UCI graduation requirement (I think only UCLA requires more). But in any even, Span 1 at UCI is the rough equivalent to 1.5 years of HS Span.

Yea this is a little confusing to me too. On the link you provided it says:

While on this page if you scroll down a bit to the “VI. Language Other Than English.” section it says:

My son had HS level Spanish in 8th grade and Spanish II in freshman year. He is assuming this won’t work for UCI’s requirements and he must take 2 years of language. Is this correct?

The requirements for transfer students satisfying GE requirements via IGETC are different than those for freshmen satisfying them at UCI. Trickydonna, what bluebayou told you is correct: your two years of HS Spanish should suffice.

Lucy55, I don’t think your son needs two years of language. Language Other Than English (Category IV) only requires Spanish through 1C (third quarter). If your son tests out of the first two quarters (1A and 1B), he’d only need 1C.

He could use additional Spanish to clear Category VIII (International/Global Studies), but frankly there are a lot of easier ways to clear this requirements (e.g., taking ANTHRO 2A).

When I went to get my igetc certified, my two years of HS spanish satisfied the foreign language req. Yours should do the same :)

oh okay awesome… i have to get my IGETC certified then  thanks for the replies!

thats weird bc i was at occ trying to get my official transcript sent to UCI. the lady told me i needed 3 years or something like that. but i guess not.

thanks for the replies!

Hi MaMoose, I was wrong, my DS had Spanish 1 in 8th grade and than two more years of Spanish in high school. So Spanish 2 and 3. However, I think he remembers very little of this. It is too long ago. Where do you think he stands in terms of meeting any language requirements?

Hey Lucy55, so long as he received a C or better in his Spanish 3 course, he’s cleared the Category VI (Language Other Than English) requirement… they don’t test you to see whether you remember it! But if he doesn’t, he’ll probably want to find an alternative class to satisfy Category VIII (there’s a ton, many of which can be applied to another GE category as well).

Thanks, we can address this at SPOP.
