Igetc....

Is the IGETC the best program to follow if you are undecided about your major and undecided about which university you want to transfer to?

I haven't decided between a cal state or a university yet.

Do the classes you pick in IGETC also matter? like if you pick the harder classes, does that up your chance of admission?

Yes, ONLY if you are sure you'll be transferring to either CSU or UC (However, if you want to transfer to Haas school of Berkeley, they have their own requirement).

At first I thought they did, but I learned in the forum that apparently, they do not matter. you just need to complete your major requirement.

No, doesn't matter what you take as long as you fulfill the requirements. It's always wise to try to overlap with your major pre-reqs when possible because otherwise you're taking extra classes for no reason. It requires a degree of planning but it well help you get out of CC much, much faster.

But yeah, unless you're leaning towards engineering, Igetc is the best way to go for both Cal States and UCs.

What do you mean by overlap? sorry im confused

You need to take IGETC courses, and you need to take pre-reqs for your major. So, say, my major required that I take soc 1, psych 1, and political science 1. These classes all ALSO counted for IGETC. Being aware of what counts for IGETC from your major will prevent you from picking random IGETC classes just to complete that requirement when the classes you're going to take for your major would have fulfilled it anyway. So instead of taking some random psych course to fulfill igetc, I took psych 1 and knocked out both a major pre-req and an Igetc requirement at the same time.

Ohhh i get what you are saying

If my major pre req requires psych 100

and i take that for igetc

I filled the igetc bubble and my major pre req bubble.

Unfortunately im undecided about my major =(

But psych is an interesting class i heard, i will be taking that this semester.

Any ideas on career testing type of things?

Eh, I don't think a test will help you decide what you're interested in. I will say, though, that you really need to spend this semester figuring out what you like and what you're interested in. For transfering, in order to get out in 2 years you REALLY need to have an idea for a major pinned down by the time you register for spring semester courses.

I seriously suggest just thinking about what you like to do, and researching schools you think you want to go to. Then, once you have an idea of where you might like to go, research the majors they offer and narrow it down to one or two that sound interesting and have similar course requirements.

I know it's rough right out of high school and not knowing what you want to do, but I think if you put some thought into it and find out what it takes to complete a major you're interested in, you'll be able to narrow it down pretty quickly.

Unfortunately im not rough out of high school, I graduated in 03, and i've completed about 6 classes so far in CC. My GPA is currently a 3.3

Ah. Well, my advice for the research still stands. Also, if your CC has any extra curriculars which sound interesting, try those. For instance, I ended up on the magazine staff for my CC, which cemented my desire to do Comm Studies at UCLA. I ended up having a not so fun experience my second year on the magazine, but I knew that comm was the only major at UCLA that I could see myself loving. So I followed it through, transferred, and have kinda gone down a different career path. But I never would've become as committed to my major had I not been SO involved in something that encompassed it.

So yeah. Just see what's out there and try stuff. If you're not concerned with getting out in two years (from now), you have much more time to take classes and decide. Just be careful for the unit cap. And your GPA is high enough with a small enough number of classes to be raised to a really acceptable level for any of the UCs, if that's where you decide you want to go.

Can you explain what a unit cap is? thanks

The unit cap is the maximum number of units allowed to be considered a junior. Since you can only transfer as a junior for the UCs, you have to be within a certain unit range. Anything over or under will keep you from transferring.

Oh i get you, i have to be within the unit range in order to transfer, i get it now.

I currently have the following grades in these classes

Criminal Justice 101 - A
Political Sciene 101- A
Math 140- A
English 101- B

unfortunately due to my past, I have a few W's on my transcript. I dont know how that is going to effect me in getting into a cal state or uc

If it's one or two W's, that is okay. But more than that I am not sure, for the UC's especially. But then, if you grade trends show that you are improving, it will be a good sign for the admissions office.

ok W's do not do anything to your admission, i had 19w's and i got into UCLA.

I was in the same position as you, i graduated HS at 16, went to CC but had no clue what i wanted to do, i just took random classes, fulfilling the IGETC requirments slowly and figuring out what i liked in the process. I definatley knew what i did not like........ for me , my major ended up being the only two subjects i actually found intresting ... math/econ..... everything else i just didnt care for.

If you really need to get the heck out of CC, which i assume your reaching that point as you have been there for 3 years already, i suggest you review the coureses you have taken, figure out which of those courses you found intresting, and maybe give yourself one more semester of exploration, but by this time, you should alreayd narrow it down to atleast a field of study.... and go from there. You should know if you prefer social sciences, or lets say physical science, or biological science, maybe if you could narrow it down that way, then you will see what specific major within that field you prefer.

Also which CSU/UCs are you intrested in. A good portion of them have guranteed transfer agreements with community colleges, i know more about the UCs than CSUs, and i can tell you that in my community colleges (i went ot multiple) there was an agreement with every single UC except LA and Berk... so that is something to also consider, ... for UCSD for example the reuqirments were slightly diffrent than the IGETC, they limited you a little bit more. ...... i belive for the CSUs there are even more options with probably some sort of guranteed transfer option to every CSU as well.

Also, there is NO unit maxiumum for the UCs, you have to have a minimum of 60 units to transfer, (60-transferable UC units) .. ... you are allowed to have over 60 units as well, HOWEVER they will give you graduation credit for up to 105 quarter units at the UC, anything over that is subject credit, meaning you can use it to satifsy requirments and prequisites but you can not use it in your total number required for graduation, you need atleast 180 quarter units to grdaute and they require that you do atleats 75 of them at a UC.

well, you know what? IgetA.

lols Ugetit?
