IIT= Harvard + MIT + Princeton

I think it's just because they get so many applicants. I heard 300,000+, which seems crazy.

out the 300,000 that take the entrance exam only about 10% or less make to one of the IITs. Students spend more time prepping for this entrance exam than they do for they're normal academics. In fact, just this last year one kid did really well on the entrance exam but failed on one subject on his school exam and was denied admission from IIT...

I'm very familiar with IIT and yes it is the best in the world for engineering-no doubt/hands down
For those who say it lacks leadership-well true it does but still most of the top-top firms/jobs are reserved (and i mean it) for IIT students. THese guys/girls are soo good that when they apply, they use MIT/Harvard/CalTech/Princeton as SAFTIES!!!!!! Believe it or not they are just that damn good

Yes I am sure HYPSM will accept a kid who did nothing for his last 2-4 years of high school studying for a exam that they don't even look at. THE ETS IS EVIL, you make a lot of sense.

IIT is impressive, and I'm sure that the best engineers will be IIT alumni (i.e. many of the top scientists of NASA are).

However, they cannot compare to the holistic education of top U.S. school for much else. (However, again, engineering superiority may be enough for many!)

A major problem that occurs at some high-end grad schools is that many better foreign graduates (like thos of IIT) come in and completely dominate the classes.

THing is, if you lived in a country that was so geared toward education, as in it is all you do, don't you honestly believe you could also be as good as some freshman at IIT?

actually dooit i do make a lot of sense. The kids dont JUST study for this exam. They compete in many international science competitions, do good in school (compared to US students), have generally tougher courses than the average HYPS admit. Plus, HYPS knows the kids taht are taking the test and know the scores they receive. I dont think people in AMerica understand the gravity and difficulty level of the exam

Isn't China basically the same way? Exam scores not only completely determine your college, but also your high schools...

36% of the NASA scientists are...........INDIANS!

A couple of you have all your facts mixed up.
First off, IIT's acceptance rate is about 1-2% not 10
Secondly, IIT-JEE is not the "hardest exam in the world"
International Olympiads are of much higher difficulty.

Trust me, I know. I'm studying to try to get in. If it was the hardest in the world I wouldn't be able to solve as many problems as I can.

An IIT student is not necessarily one that U.S. colleges look for- they might not have leadership qualities, etc.
However, one thing is certain - they are hardworking students who know a lot of Physics Chemistry and Math. A lot.

IIT's are not "better" than HYP.
Admission to IIT however is definitely more difficult than MIT or any other engineering school in the U.S.

well i said admission is 10% for all of the IITs making it 1-2% for each one..so idlaunva, how long have u been prepin for the IIT JEE? Are you preppin by urself or goin to some coaching center?
n'ways good luck on the exam and hope u'll make it thro'

btw, well in general HYPM is somewhat better than IIT. HYPM might have better campuses, activities, parties..and all sorts of fun, however, academically speaking IIT is definatley better than HYPM.

These are an IIT questions for eighth graders in India.

What is a bathyscaphe?

Barbituric acid is a) a hypnotic b) an antiseptic c) an anesthetic d) an antipyretic

a, b, c are the digits of a number system with x digits. Determine the value of the number.

Why does the life not originate abiotically in the present day atmosphere?

Give a technical name for cartilage cells.

If these are 8th grade level, imagine what the actual questions would be like…these guys are truly math/science freaks..

Uh...I don't think you realize where the strengths of HYP lie. They aren't as amazing as an undergrad school as you would hope. They are in fact the best in the world when it comes to graduate work. A harvard BSc with a SUNY PHd is nothing compaired to a SUNY BSc and a harvard PHd. The leaders of tomorrow may or may not go to HYP for undergrad but they surely go there for graduate work. On that note I have no idea about IIT and their programs.

ok anyways who cares about IIT, face it they are the best in math/sciences. I doubt that many of the CC students can even get close to getting in (including me). But dont say that IIT kids are not as qualified/leadership able as HYPS kids cause that is just not true. I know, personally, many IIT grads and they own or head huge engineering firms where, yes, they are the leaders

thus dies the IIT thread....but no doubt IIT rules the engg world...

No. That's not true at all. IIT kids DO NOT do anything other than study for this exam. Could it be one of the most challenging exams in the world? Possibly. But in no way does it corroborate with talent or leadership. Your argument is incoherent and your judgement is flawed. Students who have taken your stance has been proven wrong consistently on CC.

If you want, you can take a look at the California Institute of Technology forum where we had an adcom and other alumni spelled it out for a kid who won't take no for an answer- that MIT and CalTech are more prolific in the field of science and math than IIT will ever be.

With this, I'm retired from this thread because it has grown to an issue of self-pride and patrioism rather than a debate of substantiated evidence.

36% of the NASA scientists are...........INDIANS!

[/quote]

and 64% are not.

36% of indians in NASA is quite high, considering that NASA is american.

the remaining 64% probably has a certain percent of chinese and japanese..

I'd like to see your source for the numbers you quoted.

i've asked my dad about IIT students before, since he's an executive director in the IT department at morgan stanley. he told me that the iit students that work under him are usually book smart, but have absolutely no street smarts. they have no leadership skills and no personal character. then he said the only reason why IIT is so hard to get into is b/c it's basically THE university that everyone wants to get into in india. (and we all know how many people are in india). here in the u.s, there's plenty of excellent schools to choose from.
