Hey, through what process do IIM (Indian Insititute of Management) accept students from America? I'm an Indian (born in India, brought up overseas fluent in Hindi but illiterate!). Because apparently its as good as Harvard etc and its admissions process is the most renown in the world. Any ideas? And I'd like to go to the toughest one (IM Amhdabad or Kolkata?). Thanks guys.

entrance is through an exam called the CAT (no undergrad degrees on offer), I think you need to be in the 99.5 percentile to get into one of the better ones, although I wouldn't say they're as good as harvard, just insanely hard to get into.

I dont think they have centers in the US so you'll probably have to take the test in India.

IIM is NOT as good as Harvard. Period.

But once you leave IIM are you highly sought after? Whats the salaries of top graduates?

Depends on how good you are. If you are damn good, it doesnt matter where you go. IIM or Harvard, you know what to do and how to do that real good.

Exaclty. And anybody who manages to get into IIM is pretty damn good. Now, when it comes to brute quality of education IIM isnt really as good as people assume.
Yes ofcourse IIM grads are highly sought after because they recruit some of the best and brightest talent from India.
Iv heard of several people getting job offers from multi-national companies with $100,000 a year salaries(not counting bonus). However, these students are at the top of the class at IIM. Those at the lower rung tend to get significantly lower salaries.

I see, so IIM is more prestige about getting in rather then quality? oh kay, thanks guys.

Whats the salary differences between Harvard and IIM guys (according to their ranks obviously)? anyone know vaguely?

No, I don't.

Wow, I have never heard of any uni being as good as Harvard, not even those in the US. o.O

recruiting wise - yes.
academic quality wise - not really.

lol

from the article:
"Put Harvard, MIT, and Princeton together, and you begin to get an idea of the status of this school in India."
Ho wellz, I'm not from India, so. At least I've heard about it now.. :)

Hey academically and atmospherically, I think HYP trump IIT any day. Its just that India doesn't have too many brand-name institutions, and with this being a big engineering country, the IIT brand name is what wins it its acceptance rate. Honestly, it's a very competitive envirnoment over there (my dad attended it), definitely not what I'd like at college!

good is subjective my young padawan....esp for college level at HYP etc., its much more about the prestige of getting in than the quality of education (any small-sized tutorial group or class taught by a professor at a top LAC will trump the academic quality at HYP provided by a TA)

hi..IIM takes guys in through admission...though there is no quota for foreign students, I am sure it would be easier for you to get i.. the reason being that you shall not be compared to the indian students in ur admission criterion, so the pool for comparison which in case of indians is very huge, is very small for uy...

IIMA and C definitely have excellent placements and if placements are the only issue then you would not be worse off compared to Harvard....

as for salary, it is true that companies whcih place students abroad as in not in India pay around $100000 - 150000...but those in india pay considerably lesser and this is fair enuf considering that living expenses in INdia are far far lesser....

you can go through their websites to get an Idea of their acceptance process and if ur not and indian citizen i don think u wud be required to write cat...most probably gmat... better chek out.. if ur interestd in an INdian school, ISB at hyderabad might be worth checkingout
