IIT= Harvard + MIT + Princeton

has anyone here read 'The Prize' ? (Irving Wallace)

haven't read it.
doesn't sound like its about IIT

I have not read through all the five pages but I can tell you that is not exactly correct. We used to live in Kharagpur where one of the IIT campus is located. My father was a professor there. It is a very prestigious college, no doubt about it. I know plenty of students who came to USA universities from IIT. In India usually the high schools are tough as hell but the college isn't that challenging. I am not saying that is always the case, but usually. What's odd is that I believe two years ago the IIT faculty kids had a much easier chance to get into IIT compared to other students becuase their father and/or mothers were teachers there. I believe if they scored 60%(while ofcourse to get in usally you have to get 90% or higher I assume) they had the chance to get in, so some of my old friends I knew 10 years ago are currently attending it. But I know alot of students from IIT who are genius. Every university has its pros and cons as usual, but I can't see IIT being that high(according to 60 minutes, afterall it is a TV show) atleast not right now. IIT is awesome though, definetly one of the top schools.

Hi my dad said something about IITians, along the lines of....that majority of them leave India and try to find some foreign job as soon as they graduate. And India would have ranked along side of the more developed nations today, if they had decided to work for the progress of our country. Is there any truth in this statement. Can neone shed any light on this??

HARVARD tops the new Shanhai rankings of world's top universities (new)

WORLD'S TOP UNIVERSITIES

1 Harvard University

2 University of Cambridge

3 Stanford University

4 University of California, Berkeley

5 MIT

6 California IT

7 Columbia University

8 Princeton University

9 University of Chicago

10 University of Oxford

http://www.theage.com.au/news/natio...l?oneclick=true

i really dont know how accurate these rankings are.. for one there is no mention of yale and chicago ranks higher than oxford (i love chicago btw). obviously IIT is still not at par with hyp, but the prestige factor comes from india where IIT is considered to be the top university and students spend years preparing for entrance exam, for these students, who dont have the means to go abroad getting into IIT is the biggest accomplishment- i dont think degrading any institution is going to make another one better.
recently the NYT did a story on students in India (rural India... not the glittery, economically advanced) preparing religiously for the test.

well, bipasha, i do not believe that if the IITians had stayed in India, India would be a developed nation
nehru cursed india by installing a socialist economy which led to india having the much derided "hindu rate of growth"
for a country to be a rich first world power it does not absolutely need armies of engineers and scientists - it needs entrepreneurs
unfortunately, india's economy liberalization was only begun ~15 years ago.
of course IITians staying behind in india would be great but an India could only have been a developed nation if it had a strong market economy

i know what you are talking about lovecolumbia - in my state in India, almost all of the students who made it in IIT were from villages
my urban friends were very embarrassed about this, lol
BTW, problem in india is that almost every parent wants his/her kid to be an engineer or doctor - very few parents encourage their kids to consider something else - this idea was ok a decade ago b/c the only chance for social mobility was becoming a doctor or engineer

That is what most people believe. In my opinion it isnt really true (the part about India becoming developed). The 'brain drain' as they calll it exists but noone stops to wonder if these these guys would have been able to do that much if they had stayd in India. In fact, they are doing a better job by leaving as they bring in lots of forex. The underlying currents in India aren't conducive to development. Too much politics, corruption, apathy...

yes, a country can only be a developed nation when it has a strong market economy - look at china after 1980
another problem is that everyone talks about how bad indian politics are but does not want to get involved in such a dirty institution

4 of my cousins are IIT. one got in top 100. guess how much pressure i have on me.

gee, talk about reviving a dead thread
...what city are you in Maradona?
it is unfortunate that politicians are trying to bring quotas into IIT and IIMs to lower quality.

I'm Indian and my dad is trying to pressure me into trying the JEE. I've heard it's hard, especially the math, but how hard is it compared to some of the American tests like the USAMO and physics olympiad?

I have only looked at USAMO sample questions once online but I have an IIT math book. IIT math includes depth and breadth - they cover several topics.

Yes , it is hilariously hard to get into IIT, I know quite a few people who got in. The tests are friggin crazy evil, so good luck.

Bureaucratic Indian Education System for the win!!!

Initial Salaries Sart at 90000 - 170000 Pounds/ or 150k Dollars for Computer Enginerring Students

and of course, just mention you went to IIT and people bow down and worship you ... unless they went to IIT and had a higher rank :)

I have never heard of this school, IIT? what?? that sounds like ITT?

http://www.mathlinks.ro/Forum/viewto...ca0d6998f6b12c - some IIT math Q

Damn, this stuff's hard as ****! But I still think the Indian educations system places too much emphasis on rote learning and breadth instead of depth. I mean, they study up to differential equations in India by 10th grade, but at critical thinking contests like the IMO India is always mediocre. Also, I remember reading about some computer science contest in which universities from around the world sent their a team of their best programmers, and each team had to solve a problem set of 6 crazy hard puzzles. IIT Bombay was the only Indian team in the competition and its didn't solve a single question and placed like 40th, while the team from some Russian University solved all 6!!

on the other hand, I have never heard of ITT...
but anyway, IIT=Indian Institutes of Technology - the most prestigious school in India. Admissions are notoriously tough.

IIT alumni have gone on to achieve prominent positions at all the major global companies today. One that comes to mind right now is Vinod Khosla - co-founder of Sun Microsystems and a powerful venture capitalist today.
