When one fallows this
World's Best Universities: Engineering and IT - US News and World Report
its shows top iit ( bombay ) is at 30th position ...it means that the hype about the iit's here in india is total rubbish .....iit's r best in india but not in world .......so why this hype about JEE preperation all over india when one can get better college by studying less (according to me SAT 1 & 2 are far easy than JEE )

Well, then comes the biggest factor, MONEY! You can’t go to the States without the moolah baby! $_$ (unless you’ve got financial aid, which is very, very tough for international students to get.)
IITs are ranked low because of the abysmal research activity compared to that of the universities in US and UK.

dear god, how many times will people keep brining up these rankings? Yes, IITs are not good comapred to other universities, mainly for the reason smit mentioned. But if you notice, none and I mean NONE of the other eng. colleges in India even made it on that list. So, people here give IITs imprtance because they at least got placed on the list. And on a side note, who gives a **** about rankings? Just go out there and pick the college you like, for god’s sake. It honestly does not matter which ranked college you go to, as long as you pursue your interest with passion.

I totally agree with what surfup mentioned.
These rankings change year after year… So after 4/5/6 years when you graduate, the rankings may have substantially changed. So never choose a university/college just because of its ranking!
Example:Georgia Tech was ranked 8th in 2008 according to USNWR. In 2009, it dropped to 12th.

i agree with what u guys say …but i have a couple of friends in iit bombay …dey say the job opportunities which a graduate frm MIT or Caltech or Berkeley or any good college for that matter are far better and more than a IITian can get …

Well, that’s obvious.

i dont really think iit even deserve 30 th rank. the reason iit got that rank is because at has nice brain not because of infrastructure or teaching quality

hi carreshwell, are you a current or past student of iit?

i was currently preparing for iit jee and sat’s. But i know nicely about iits as my brother is studying there.

dats the problem…d conventional thinkin of indian people …i want to prepare for SAT but my parents want me to give second preference to it …so now i have to study 8 hours a day preparing for JEE …joined coaching classes for JEE …where as if i would dedicate same time for preparing for SAT 1 & 2 may …i can make it to Caltech , berkeley , standford or even MIT which are better than the IIT’s

carreshwell how are preparing for both JEE and SAT’s …?? how do you manage it ??? is ur coaching or school prepares u for both ???

carreshwell, how are BITs (compared to IITs)? are they difficult to get into?

well maybe i can offer some perspective. I am currently in FIITJEE, joined back in 11th and still continuing. The thing is, I balanced my IIT stuff with my ECs(which included sports and other stuff). I also found some time to do what I was interested in, such as compete in marathons, write research abstracts etc. Now, after 2 years and IITJEE in nearly a month, I have pretty much decided to go the US but had I not, I would still be preparing for it as I write this. so doing IITJEE and trying for US can be done at the same time. But let me say this honestly, unless you are some pcm-genius and make it to those international olympiads or win some national competitions along those lines, MIT and caltech will be pretty hard. So if you really really want to go to MIT, join a normal school and focus all of your efforts on what YOU want to do. Give up IIT, focus on your passions, and you just might make it. I did this but a bit too late(spent all of 11th grade studying for IIT only to realize it wasn’t for me but back at athat time, I wasn;t sure about US either)

And lastly, people from India always underestimate MIT, caltech, and other such colleges. They are not something you can “crack.” You’re supposed to do what you love and if they think you’re a good match, they will accept you. You should never try to match up to those colleges but rather do what you want to do if you want even a decent chance at getting into the “big shot” colleges. This is why MIT is harder to get into IIT(screw the acceptance rates…just trust me on this).

And as a side note, why not apply to some LAC’s and pursue pure science? If you like the IITJEE system of pcm(I am assuming you do), pure science would suit you better and LAC’s have some of the best pure science programs.

hey surfup i agree with what u said …i completed my 11th now …i am in resonance ( also joined fiitjee corresponce - percentile 98.7 in open test by fiitjee ) …as preparing for iit v r good in pcm …so as u said v need to have won international and national Olympiads for havin a real chance to make it to MIT or caltech …so as v r preparing for iit v can b good at dese Olympiads as our pcm is strong …so preparing for JEE is in a way helping us …its just English v have to worry about …

i hav got a solution for u …u can apply to US colleges the next year when u r already studyin in an indain engineering college …and if u get a good college then leave the college u r in and go to US …my dad did the same while his first year in IIT kanpur he applied to US colleges and also got selected in few goods one… but he didnt went because of scholarship

yeah i agree with carreswell iits dont even deserve 30th rank i ws also in resonance bt left it after a few months to study for SAT 1 & 2.

lol tushar, I’ll pass. One of the reasons I quit IITJEE prep was the people. No offense, but I am just not a nerd and can never be one(not saying nerds are bad or anything). and plus, my parents are in the US :)

All you noobs preparing for JEE AND US, send me a message ‘via email’, not ‘via PM’. I’ve been through the process, and there are a few things I would like to share.

Yeah one should choose what he has to do.IITJEE or SAT.It really sucks if you try to keep your feet on 2 different boats going in different directions.

^^ You DON’T. And US is NOOOOOT = SAT
As I said send me an email and add me on gtalk/YM/MSN thereon.

“One of the reasons I quit IITJEE prep was the people. No offense, but I am just not a nerd and can never be one(not saying nerds are bad or anything)”

Haha, same here.
