IIT School of Applied Technology

When Philip Danforth Armour gave a million dollars to found Armour Institute, the core of what later became Illinois Institute of Technology, his intent was to fulfill founder Frank Gunsaulus' vision of a school that would allow students of all backgrounds to prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society. Now we are into the third century in which IIT continues to meet this need in Chicago, Illinois and the world. In keeping with the goal of meeting the needs of a "changing industrial society", IIT has announced the formation of the School of Applied Technology. The school will be composed of degree programs in Information Technology and Management, Industrial Technology and Management, and will also include IIT's not-for-credit Professional Learning programs. Professor C. Robert Carlson, formerly Chair of IIT's Computer Science department and Director of IIT's suburban Rice Campus, will serve as dean of the School.

Within the School of Applied Technology, the Information Technology and Management (ITM) program currently offers specializations in computer and network security, voice and data communication technology, IT management and entrepreneurship, data management, internet development and electronic commerce, systems analysis, software development, systems administration, management information systems, digital systems technology and healthcare information technology. The Bachelor of Information Technology and Management program accepts incoming freshmen as well as transfer students from community colleges.

The Industrial Technology and Management (INTM) program offers specializations in industrial logistics, facilities management and manufacturing technology. The Bachelor of Industrial Technology and Management program accepts transfer students from community colleges and has a strong track record in working with graduates of union apprenticeship programs to allow them to complete their Bachelor's degree.

Both degree programs offer a professional Masters degree in addition to the Bachelors degrees, and many student completing their undergraduate degree elect to continue directly into graduate-level studies. Courses are offered both at IIT's Main Campus on the south side of Chicago, as well as IIT's Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Campus in suburban Wheaton where the School of Applied Technology is headquartered.
