Illinois ACT Thread. Silverturtle, want to help get a full list? = D

Ah, must have read it wrong. Oh well…

^ yeah.

They told us 5-8 weeks = (. Wha?? Hopefully it comes earlier like the time I took the ACT in Feb. and I got it in the mail after 10 days.

I think it takes longer because they have so many more to score. xD

^ DX I’m hoping it’ll be a bit earlier than expected … I remember our Juniors last year got them in May :/

I agree with cribelle about L answer. I agree with Kanan about the L maze. That’s what I put. What about the question with the spider web? Is it 30 or 45 or some other choice. It had 12 angles or something.

The sum of all 12 must be 360. Average is 360/12 so the anser is 30.

^30 degrees was the answer. You could have gone about it different ways.

Easiest way would be 360 / 12 = 30

More complex method:
((12-2)180)/12 = 150 << one interior angle (1/2 = one base angle of isosceles triangle)
180 -150 = 30

-1-cos^2 = ? The answer was sin^2.
-There was also another one with 8y =12x and what is one possible x+y value. I wasn’t too sure but I got 8 (B)

^ right for both.

^^ 8y=12x was 25

8(15) = 12(10)
120 = 120

15+10 = 25

I think I got something different for the x+y value. What were the other answers?

Edit: Yeah 25 is what I got.

Hi! I’m a newbie to cc, but did anyone find the science section ridiculously challenging? I got a 33 S on the February test, and found myself running out of time at the end. I am praying for a 30 or a generous curve right now.

Also, did the writing prompt seem a tad far-fetched? I found that it was much more specific and also slightly stupid. Oh well. I definitely don’t think that my ACT score is going up with this one :(

^Agree with all of that.

I, without much confidence, said that it was a digression, but I didn’t feel that the question was valid.

English/Writing: The ACT was far more punctuation-focused than I expected, and they had more subjective questions about the passage as a whole than I had anticipated.

Math: I felt much more crunched for time on the ACT, which was mostly a product of my lack of preparation. The questions were certainly different in style than those of the SAT: they were indeed more straightforward application of concepts than the SAT’s more reasoning-dependent questions.

Reading/Critical Reading: The names of these sections are more appropriate than I expected. The SAT truly does require test-takers to synthesize and interpret much more than does the ACT. There were quite a few questions that were mere paraphrases of the original text. I think that the SAT does a better job of walking the fine line between straight-from-the-text answers and overly subjective and unsupportable answers. The vocabulary section from the SAT wasn’t missed much, though.

Science: I’m not quite sure yet how I feel about whether this section should be on the test. Although I am sure I could improve my efficiency with preparation, seven passages felt like too much today for the time allotted.

I found the science fairly straightforward. Only a couple confusing questions IMO.

Yes, writting was a wth moment. Like honestly? how many pts can someone come up about with this topic? Its all good though b/c I wrote over 3.5 pages so at least an 11 = D.

^ Yeah Math is much different on the ACT than the SAT. I was also suprised at how many subjective questions there were… there normally isn’t so many = /. Agree with you on reading, and yes, the Science section with practice can be improved upon greatly. Just have to get used to the format/time limit.

I think you mean “The SAT truly does require test-takers to synthesize and interpret much more than does the ACT”.

well so far I haven’t missed a question out of all the answers posted, although there are a few I felt iffy about. With the generous curve I’m hoping for a 36…

Woops, thanks.

The prompt for February was so much better! I write for our town’s newspaper, so I pretty much had a lot of random “personal experience” jargon in there…hopefully it will be better than my pathetic writing score last time.

Science is my weakest section in general, but it seemed worse today. Very few people from my school completed it; I had about 3 questions left when time expired (yay for guessing).

And good luck everyone!! Ohh and also, is it true that the curve for PSAE ACT is more generous than most? Someone told me that and I wasn’t sure if it was just rumor.

^^^ samesies. - 1 on reading so far = /.

^ nah rumors fly around everywhere. People said this would be easier, I found it about average. MAYBE, but dont count on it. Hopefully the states have an “agreement” with ACT so that they get a generous curve which = higher scores = more money from the gov. = p
