Illinois Commitment: free tuition/fees for qualifying instate students

Seems to me it would make costs of going to U of I more if your over the 61,000.

We’ll see. One of the things we enjoyed with our kids (2017 and 2019) was locked in tuition for each of their 4 years.

https://secure.osfa.illinois.edu/NPC/NPC.asp is UIUC’s net price calculator.

For a dependent IL resident student CS major with married parents earning $60,999, it estimates at net price of $27,466 after $8,544 grants subtracted from $36,010 list price, according to https://secure.osfa.illinois.edu/NPC/Results.asp?studentRes=Yes&BudgetCode=URCO&Major=Computer+Science&fafsadt=Yes&Parentmaritalstatus=Married%2Fremarried&NumberInfamily=3&NumberIncollege=1&ParentIncome=60999&incomefrom=Both+parents&ParentIncometax=3000&Parentassets=0&StudentIncome=0&StudentIncometax=0&Studentassets=0 . Since the non-tuition part of the list price is $15,008, the promise does not appear to be reflected in the net price calculator.

Note that even free tuition may not make UIUC affordable to many lower income IL residents, since UIUC is in a less populated area that requires many students to live there at higher cost than commuting from home would cost.

@ucbalumnus-this program is a huge initiative, especially for UIUC and in Illinois…you seem to be complaining that it’s not enough…well, let’s see…that would be socialism. “Middle class” families include those making way more than the threshold for this new program, and it’s a sacrifice to send a child to UIUC - at our first admissions event, the very first thing the presenter said was, “…we’re not giving you any money.” OK. Clear on that expectation. Yes, it’s a burden to pay the bills to the Illinois flagship, and as a UIUC parent, its really encouraging to see progress in UIUC’s array of attempts to pull back on that burden. 88jm19 (hi!) makes an excellent point about our truth-in-tuition law and the tuition freeze we’ve enjoyed for the last 4 years or so…at MOST, our family faces a single tuition increase between my children, even though they’re years apart in age. No complaints, there.
