out-of-state cost

According to the freshman application, total costs in 2009 are estimated at $48,500. Is this really true? This seems crazy for a public university...most private universities don't cost this much. Are 8% raises a year (it was $42000 last year) typical? Do they want to keep out-of-state students out of the university?

I know! I was totally thinking the same thing. mid-40 grand is ridiculous for a state school.

I talked to my guidance counselor about this, (I'm from MN) and she said that UIUC is 93% in state, and since they pay lower tuition, they want OOS'ers to pay more since theyare so scarce, which would enhance the profit.
Very few out of state applicants apply there, as well, so being out of state sky rockets your chances of admission, because they want your money.

And they only have merit based scholarships, to make things even worse.

UIUC is virtually inaccessible to "normal income" out of state kids.

i dont think it skyrockets.

i still think for most state universities, in state have a lot easier time getting in than OOS.

Tuition locks at UIUC. That is, your tuition freshman year remains the same all four years. That's one bit of happy info.

I think the most recent stats I read were that 85% of UIUC students are from Illinois, and the state legislature recently rebuffed the university's plan to increase out of state/international enrollment; apparently UIUC has one of the lowest percentages of OOS in the Big 10. Illinois legislators do not want to continue subsidizing the university when many of their constituents are not being admitted.

MidWestMom:

Do you know if this will take affect for this fall's OOS applicants?

yeah

im pretty sure OOS is still much harder than in-staet.

Any legacy scholarships? My mom went to UI, and I like the school, and will probably be applying. But if it's 50k a year then hell no, WAY TOO expensive for a state school.
