Illinois extends application deadline

Well, I guess this is what happens when you cancel your EA program and don't accept the Common App...

http://blog.admissions.illinois.edu/?p=18755

Obviously their app numbers dropped; who could have guessed?

That’s hilarious. Does this mean a higher acceptance rate? I don’t really think a significant amount of people will apply really, if they didn’t apply by December 1st then they probably won’t apply now.

I’m pretty sure the acceptance rate will go up. This reminds me of what happened with the admissions scandals a few years back, that year the admissions rate was up quite a bit due to the reduced applicants. Because of this, I imagine the same will happen this year because you’re right in saying most people who didn’t apply by the first probably wouldnt have applied.

Illinois doesn’t have an acceptance rate, they have 100+ acceptance rates. On average they will be higher if they did indeed get fewer apps (how could they not have?), but no telling on a specific individual major.

Canceling EA was a monumentally boneheaded move in my view, especially considering the explanation for doing so, which pretty much boils down to ‘we don’t like taking phone calls (and associated costs) from people who either don’t understand the deferral process or who have had their feelings hurt due to being deferred’. The claptrap about not wanting to make applicants feel “2nd class” is literally unbelievable, as they weren’t doing anything that 100% of their EA peer schools weren’t doing.

We’ll see what kind of data they release on apps (not likely much). As I said at the time months ago, they will not only get fewer apps but also end up with a lower yield as the no EA policy forces kids to apply to more schools. Any other school would consider such results a disaster, yet Illinois seems not to care. Good news for those students who really want to enroll!

Does this mean that admissions will be easier in any way this year?

In my opinion it will definitely be easier than it would have been had they not canceled EA (it is pretty much guaranteed that they receive fewer apps than they would have, which is not the same as receiving fewer apps than last year). However, this doesn’t mean it will necessarily be easier than it was last year; certainly not for every major. For example, CS popularity is still growing rapidly apparently, and this will probably overwhelm the effect of canceling EA. Again though, it will still be easier to get in to CS than it would have had they not canceled EA.

Still open…

“There is no official deadline of when the application will now close. It could close at any time so we recommend anyone interested in applying submit an application as soon as possible.”

Wow, what a train wreck…

I think next year’s applicants are going to get their EA back.

As someone who applied to Math and CS, this gives me some hope. And yeah, it seems very unorganized.

All supporting documents were due December 12th, but it still says “(Deadline extended for a limited time)” under the filing period. Does this mean applicants can still apply? What do you guys think about this? We are nearing two weeks after the original end date and it might possibly still be open? What’s going on?

@YZamyatin‌ I’ve applied to CS Engineering and I hope this is true - UIUC is my dream school. I don’t blame them, as this is a completely new system.

@‌Football97
It is still open, so you can still apply, but they are making no guarantees. Basically, it is a very fluid situation where they may accept the late supporting documentation and they may not, kinda chaotic. I think the window will close very soon though.

@emshadez‌
My son is applying to the same major. CS will still be super competitive. It has had the highest ACT scores of any major in the school for a couple of years now and that probably won’t change this year. I’m curious what the exact applicant numbers are/have been but they won’t tell me :)

@YZamyatin‌ Yep, I decided to apply to the math and comp sci major instead in LAS since the engineering one is way too competitive (math and comp sci is competitive too still).

@emshadez‌ - …what is the new system?

When will the numbers come out regarding how many students applied? Their website still says the deadline is extended for a limited time. As we are now 3 weeks + over the initial deadline, what’s the reason for it still being open?

They are not talking but I think it’s obvious that app numbers came in much lower than desired. We’ll never know just how much though because the extension will help them make up a lot of ground. We will hear total numbers in February, probably.

They are now capturing apps from kids who were rejected or deferred from peer schools. At least that is why it has stayed open so long. Don’t see why they would close it before the end of the year now.

Now they get to compete to enroll kids with all the schools those kids added as a result if Illinois cancelling EA…crazy.

Do you guys think people who applied before November 1st might have a better chance at getting merit scholarships since app numbers are down?

I don’t think app dates makes any difference at all. Scholarships are not announced until February, after all apps have been looked at.

Happy New Year…

and yes, the Illinois application is still open!

it’s still open? I just hope they close it. wouldn’t we then have more chances of being admitted if there are fewer applicants?

@wldb15 I believe that it is almost unfair that the application is open this late. If a deadline, a literal end-date, is extended… then students that are applying this late are students who clearly didn’t choose Illinois for a top choice or were not responsible enough to pace themselves according to it (the deadline). My worry is that students who didn’t get into top CS/Engineering programs from possibly Ivy Leagues, Stanford, MIT, or other top schools who did not consider Urbana-Champaign earlier may take this opportunity swiftly.

@emshadez‌ yeah it is. I think the people who submitted their applications within the duedate should be given priority over the ones who handed them in during the extended deadline. It’s just simply TOO unfair :frowning:
