For those who care or didn't already know, my interviewer tells me UChicago received just over 2800 apps for EA class of 2010. According to collegeboard.com, last year's number was 2,432.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... not good

scary scary scary............

Uh oh. (+characters)

I hope they still admit around 40%. But wow, this is about a 16% increase...

I talked an assistant director of admissions and she said that they're accepting a third, rejecting a third, and deferring a third.

lovely... somehow ive got a feeling ill be in the deffered lot...

"I talked an assistant director of admissions and she said that they're accepting a third, rejecting a third, and deferring a third."

I find it hard to believe that Chicago, which has consistently accepted around 40-50% of students would only accept 33% EA this year because of a mere 16% increase in applications. Chicago's EA/RD numbers tend to be almost the same.

Yes, but if there's an increase in EA applicants there may well be a greater increase in regular apps, in which case, they don't want to have those spaces filled with anyone they're iffy about- hence the deferral of a third...which is bad new for me. sadness

There was one other student who interviewed this summer and also reported that this was the plan the admissions office had. They said they expected about 3,000 applications and would accept a third, reject a third, and defer a third. It looks as if their figures weren't too far off.

I do think those who apply EA and are deferred will still have a real shot in the spring. Applying early tips the admissions off that you have a strong interest in the school.

Nationally, with a great deal of variability from school to school, about 40% of deferred applicants are later admitted. If this were to hold at Chicago (and I don't know that it does), and given that 33% are admitted outright, that means that about 45% or a little more of the entire EA pool will "eventually" be admitted. As can been seen from the class of 2009 accepted students thread, one can boost one's chances if deferred by letting them know how much one wants to be there, and sending in additional material for them to consider. (This also implies that the RD only pool has less of a chance of admission than is represented by the posted RD admission rate at most schools).
