Illinois, GA Tech, Michigan, and a few maybes

Hello,
I am having an extremely difficult time deciding what school to go to next year. I am trying to enter engineering, probably electrical, and will likely double major with Physics. I have been accepted into U of Illinois, GA Tech, and U Michigan, all highly-ranked but relatively easy to get into. I am also waiting to hear from Cornell and Carnegie Mellon. Can anybody give me any input? I have visited all three (of the ones I got in to already) and have loved them all.

Your assumptions are dubious.

Are you in-state for any of them?

In terms of Engineering, the three schools that accepted you and the two that have yet to respond are all equally excellent. In fact, they are ranked #5-#9 in the nation according to the latest undergraduate USNWR reputational ranking. It does not get more even than that!

I think there are four things to consider when choosing between those five universities:

Cost of attendance. Is cost a concern or is your family willing and easily able to afford all five options? If money is not a concern, move on to the next points, but if it is a concern, obviously, crossing out any school that would require you to take out too many loans is a good idea.

Fit. You said you loved all three campuses. Which one did you love the most? Where would you be happiest? They are very different.

Overall quality of the university. Although all five universities are excellent, Cornell and Michigan are more well rounded than the other three. GT has decidedly strong and dominant technical/science components. Two thirds of GT undergrads major in Engineering or Computer science. CMU is also quite science-based, with 50% of undergrds majoring in Engineering or Science. UIUC is more well rounded, but not that strong in non-science fields. Cornell and Michigan are strong across all academic disciplines.

Location. Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Ithaca, Pittsburgh and Urbana-Champaign are all very different. Which city/are do you like best.

“I have been accepted into U of Illinois, GA Tech, and U Michigan, all highly-ranked but relatively easy to get into.”

Just go to MIT and be done with it.

Is that why barrons said that “his assumptions are dubious”?

Are you instate for any of these publics? It’s crazy to pay OOS for say GT if you’re instate for UMich or UIUC.

What is your family say? Are they willing to pay full-freight for all these schools? If not, wait for your FA pkgs to decide. It’s very likely that the OOS schools will give you very little aid.

Im out of state for all of them…
And when I say I loved them all a ton, I recognize that they are all different, but I loved so many different things about each of them and felt perfectly suited for all three.

What did you like about each school?

What did you dislike about each school?

can you afford them all?

Michigan’s calling your name.
