@ErinsDad …wait, you don’t have to join the Corps of Cadets to get the in state tuition, right?
Just trying to be clear for the OP.

I just wanted to thank everyone that weighed in. Actually, my son normally steers clear of this kind of research - but he has been anxiously clicking F5 to refresh for posts!
He was like “Pitt” - yeah, we talked about that in APUSH…
We had a pretty adult-like conversation tonight. Probably no different than the groom just before the doors open - I think he just wanted to talk it out and make sure that he is good.
For now, we are going to just leave things as they are with Ole Miss and Alabama. He stated that he gets a solid education with a huge alumni base and ample coop and intern programs. The best part, he starts his adult life with a good degree, a free car (that’s from us), and zero debt. I am trying to imagine being 22 with my worldly possessions in a Honda and making $75K!
Personally, I got to join the Army…go figure!
I think he is at peace and we will just see how the two southern schools stack up financially and make our final decision around the dinner table. He did ask for one final loop back through both schools during football season. It sounds silly, but after 5-6 schools - everything starts to blend together…bricks, quads, dorms, cafeterias…
All that being said, he is researching Pitt right now. Maybe that is a realistic reach. I can tell he is content now with where we are/were. Feeling like we were on the right track all along, just needed a little attaboy from the sidelines.
So thanks!
Another Illinoisan here. We live an hour from UIUC, and D2 is not applying. Great program, yeah, but expensive, no merit, and a shaky state make it much less attractive than UA or UAH!
@morida …if you have not already done so, please join us on the Parents Class of 2017 board!
He sounds like a great kid. The whole “search and application” process can be a bit hyped if a kid is already content with what is on the list.
You don’t have to join the corps, but it’s fairly pervasive at the school despite the corps being only 5% of the student population.
That’s great OP! He could have a very smooth and relatively stress-free senior year. Something to be said for that. And a great deal can be said about graduating with a good engineering degree debt free. :-bd
Welcome to BAMA class of 2021. DD loves BAMA. I had a great graduate experience at TAMU, and see plenty of similarities between TAMU and UA, but UA IMHO will give an OOS student a better experience for many reasons, including the high number of OOS students at UA. Ole Miss has improved recruiting of OOS students, but UA is more of a national university than Ole Miss. H and I grew up in WI, and have been pretty broadly exposed to college between our kids, and friends’/relatives’ kids. UA has some wonderful honors programs that DS can take advantage of too, as mine is.
It will be a relief to have everything fall into place and enjoy senior year of HS.
