I just recieved a letter indicating that I have been named a 2008-09 State Scholar. It goes on to say that of approximately 147,000 graduating high school seniors I am one of the elite who qualifies as a State Scholar. Is this award prestigious? How many people receive this award?

I think it's awarded to the top 10% of all graduating high school seniors in Illinois(147,000)...I guess it's kinda prestigious althogh 10% is ~14,700. It says that there's no monetary award but they recommend putting it on college apps. Of course, the one app that I'd want to put it on most is the school I applied to EA (Stanford).

As I recall, it is an award based strictly on your ACT score. The top 10% or so of students in Illinois get it, so pretty much all the smart kids in your school got the award. I doubt if it would make one iota of difference in your Stanford application - after all, you didn't do anything extra to win the award, and they already know you have good test scores.

I got the same letter in the mail today. I would put it down for the hell of it but I already sent out all my applications. lol

I got the same letter today indicating that I have been named a 2009-10 State Scholar. It goes on to say that of more than 150,000 graduating high school seniors, I am one of the elite who qualifies as a State Scholar.

I resurrected this thread because I was too lazy to make a new one.

lol def got that the other day too...is it worth completely creating a new version of common app just to put that on there? lol idk i should
