I'm 23 and looking to go to school in Ireland

So I’m 23 and originally I didn’t go to school as I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life yet but after a few years I would like to go to school to become a teacher. I had poor grades in high school and I’m looking to get a bachelor’s degree in English Studies or English Literature in Ireland. I was looking to see what others thought, advice any of you may have, and if this would be possible with my poor grades in high school. Thanks!

Can you afford to spend 3 years, full-pay study abroad? Have you taken the SAT or ACT?

Unless you are already living and working in Ireland, I’d suggest starting at your community college where you can demonstrate that you are capable of ‘making the grade’ academically, then transferring to your state U - many of which have excellent teaching programs.

At 23 you qualify as a ‘mature’ applicant (it’s a category, not a judgement!). Minimum marks for general admission at UCD are 3.0 GPA and 1500/2400 SAT or 22 ACT. If you don’t have that, you are best off taking the MSAP, but afaik it is only offered in Ireland (international mature students are thin on the ground). As an example, UCD tuition is about E18K/year; housing about E5-10. They have scholarships but realistically you need to be prepared to be full pay. If you are FAFSA eligible in the US you can use FAFSA for Ireland as well.

Understand that this is just for an English degree- not for a teaching qualification, which is a horse of a very different colour and probably not a realistic option for you in Ireland.

Thank you, this is extremely helpful
