I'm a Computer Science Pre-Major and I have just started to consider 2D animation

Next year I will be a first year student attending the University of Utah and I am basically the first person in my family that is going to be going to a University so they aren’t very knowledgeable when it comes to these kinds of questions. I am planning on doing the entertainment arts undergraduate program for game design, but recently I have been torn between what kind of career I really want to go into. I want to go into either game design, 3D animation or just recently I have been really thinking about 2D animation.

My current plan that I have been thinking of is with the entertainment arts emphasis I will take both elective options for the game design side and the animation side because it’s only going to be a couple extra classes from the minimum requirements. Now I guess the question I really have is would it be worth it for me to take the steps to learn 2D animation and what I would have to do to get me anywhere in 2D? I’ve been thinking about doing an Animation Studies Minor which appears to mainly be for 2D animation which I’d be really excited for, but I’m not sure if that would be enough for me to be able to really get me far if I do choose to pursue a career in 2D animation. Because of this I’ve also been looking into doing maybe a drawing minor as well.

What minor(s) would be best for me to gain the skills I would need to get a career in 2D animation? Would it really be worth looking into 2D animation for the work and money I would have to put into it? Would I be able to study 2D animation without having to add an extra year to my schooling (It’s the $$ that concerns me here)?

If you want to study animation, you need to learn to draw really, really well. You need to master form and figure drawing, and then learn about proportions and anatomy before you even start to animate. A minor in drawing would definitely be your best bet.
