I'm a HS Student. I heard that your race determines how hard it is to get into a college.

Hope you all are having a pleasant day.

I’m a freshman in HS, and I’ve heard this rumor going around about race determining your chances to get accepted into a college. Since there are so many Asians coming to the United States, it’ll be harder for an Asian to get accepted to a college than a different race. To any extent does anybody know this is true?

Thanks for the responses.

It is partially true. Race is just one of the many many factors. However, race doesn’t matter much outside of top schools or programs. If you are in California or Texas then fortunately California doesn’t look at race and neither does Texas auto admitting colleges if you have qualifying stats. Schools who talk about holistic admissions are the ones with most unholy practices.

For some colleges, it matters. For others, it does not. See the college’s common data set section C7.

Where it does matter, it probably matters less than most people assume around here.

This is already a race thread in college admissions and I don’t think you’re allowed to start any new ones. My take is a) race matters, b) colleges aren’t going to be transparent on exactly how much race factors in, and C) the Espenshade study, based on admissions data from the 80s and 90s, is almost ancient at this point.

@roethlisburger Oh I was not aware of the thread. I’m quite a new member.

You mentioned “coming into the US.” Are you an international student? That’s a whole different question.

Some colleges are looking for more Asian students to balance their demographic pool. Look at liberal arts colleges.

Closing thread. There is already a thread on race in college admissions.
