I'm a reject. UCR? Or CC

My fears have become a reality: ive been rejected to LA, SB, SD, and I. I wasnt perticularly excited to get the acceptance packet from UCR in the mail, and it actually sat on my desk for over a month; Is UCR that bad of a school? For the money my CC just down the street is a fraction of the price and a fraction of the heat and smog of the inland empire. I kinda want the college experience, but it's not worth it to me to go a crappy school.

UCRiverside is a good school. It’s not crappy.

What is your major?

Did you qualify for any aid or merit there?

Riverside? or Redlands? Actually I know people who have gone to both schools and had a great experience. You can definitely get “the college experience” at either of them.

UC Riverside, if that’s what you’re talking about, is a baby UC! It just started up, and is accepting a lot of people because it’s still trying to earn it’s rep. I was on soompi forums not too long ago, and a lot of people go there for Business. There were definitely people with high stats (2000+ SAT scores) going to UCR. Don’t be afraid to go. :)

I know a lot of people talk about how easy it is to get in there, but college is what you make of it! I forgot where I read it, but I think Riverside came from either UCLA or UCI. Why don’t you look up reviews of UCR and how the students there like it?

In the end, it’s your choice. If you really want to go to UCLA and the rest, you should try a CC then transferring. I don’t know about transferring from one UC to another, but that’s another route, I suppose. Good luck! :)

Just go to CC. don’t go to UCR with that crappy attitude.

Yea, go to a cc. UCR should have rejected you, too.

You’re right. I do have a sour attitude. I’m kinda upset at myself for not setting the bar higher and having the decision to go to the school of my choosing. But it’s just that I’ve heard very mixed reviews of riverside! Some people make the most of it and others don’t seem to like it at all.

Im gonna be doing premed stuff, not business. And the further I look into it the more I’m drawn to it as I’d be able to get the bio classes I’d need. And I understand they will be opening their own med school?

Well, thinking whether UCR is a bad school or not really depends on you. The reason why I told you to go to CC is that you seem like you’re overwhelmed by the reviews. And you called UCR crappy. So why not just go to CC and transfer to a better school where you think you’ll be happy? You can have plenty of first year experience as a transfer student if you live in the transfer dorms.

UC Riverside, if that’s what you’re talking about, is a baby UC! It just started up.

Oh my. Please know a little about a school before you post absolute hogwash.

UCR did NOT just start up. It’s over SIXTY years old. YES…over 60 years old.

It’s older than: UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz.

The new UC is UC MERCED…established in 2005.

Anyway…UCR is a very fine school. Nothing to fear about going there. Certainly much, much better than a CC. One of the students who is in my son’s PhD program is a UCR grad.

And, it certainly is more than adequate for a pre-med student.

Be thankful! It’s not that bad.

boxxybabee, if you really find that you can’t get excited about attending your safety, consider taking a gap year, working or volunteering in a medical field and then reapplying. You may find that the second time around you have a different set of criteria and feel much happier with where you end up.

I think too many kids pick a safety as an after-thought and then feel down when they head off. I’m not saying that people don’t end up loving their safety - they often do. But if the safety isn’t something you really want, don’t feel boxxed in.

I think the student needs to revisit UCR (if she hasn’t already). I think she’d be impressed. Lots of money has been invested in that campus. New buildings, remods, etc.

You can do a Virtual Tour here…

For a pre-med student, it is very good!

It’s a UC,which in itself says a lot. I agree for a premed it is very good, and might be beneficial to you over the other UCs. You are disappointed right now which is natural and normal given the rough ride you have had.

I wasn’t thrilled at one of my son’s choice of a state school, but it gave him everything he needed and wanted. It was truly a good deal all around. It was just my own attitude that was the problem.

I think you may be confusing geography with quality of school.

A family member went to UC Riverside. He really enjoyed it and got a great education as well as made lifelong friends. It’s very good for pre-med. I predict you will love it and give up any idea of transferring.

O: Really? I could have sworn that UCR was built just before Merced. Which is weird, if it’s so old, shouldn’t it have better rankings, assuming a school gets better with time, lol?
My mistake.

Anyway, UCR isn’t that bad of a school. Anyone can say that it’s not that good a school either, but opinions are opinions. If you’re going to premed, I think you’ll like it. I have heard that it’s “easier”, but to each their own. I think a lot of ‘elitsts’ on CC will laugh at you if you said you attend UCR, but don’t worry about it. I don’t think where you go to school matters that much, I think your GPA & MCAT score >>> where you attended for undergrad.

In the end, it’s your choice and all on you. (: Good luck.

UCR outranks several nationally known universities including Florida State, University of Kansas, University of Arizona, University of Oregon, University of the Pacific, SUNY Stony Brook, and Washington State University.

Everybody I know who has gone to UC Riverside loved it, and went on to a successful career. The city of Riverside has some very nice attractions, including the Mission Inn. Go for a visit. I promise you will like it. :)

Your attitude is just fine as long as it doesn’t cause you to do stupid things like turn down UCR for a CC.

Just go to UCR and keep your attitude. Then you’ll be pleasantly surprised…

… Or not!

UCR is a great place. The buildings are very nice and they made a new medical school. they are just waiting to open it. UCR is going to be a great school in the next 10-15 years. Each year they are getting stricter on their prospective students and every new incoming freshmen class is more prepared than the last.

O: Really? I could have sworn that UCR was built just before Merced. Which is weird, if it’s so old, shouldn’t it have better rankings, assuming a school gets better with time, lol?

The school’s rankings have likely improved over the years. It’s a top 100 university…quite good considering that there are thousands of colleges in the US.

No, schools can’t just keep rising in ranking as they get better with time. The top schools will always occupy those spots. There is a little jockeying back and forth amongst the top tier and the within the mid-tiers. But, on the whole, schools can’t just keep rising in rankings over time.

I’m just a high school senior, and haven’t been to any college, but I plan to do pre-med, and my brother is currently doing pre-med, so hopefully I can help. I think you’d do much better at UCR than at a Community College. You most definitely will make friends at UCR, and as long as you are happy there, you’ll be in a good position to keep up your grades, participate in extracurriculars (including clinical ones) and try to score well on the MCAT. Make sure to keep these goals in focus, and you should do well at UCR, and get many options as to where to go for med-school.
