I'm an athletic Asian that's bad at math. Uh-oh.

Ok. So to begin:

GPA: 3.577
Weighted GPA: 4.038
Rank in Class 88 / 658

So as you can see from my info, I'm definitely not in the 'creme de la creme' of my class. I have managed to make a name of myself in Cross Country, though. This year was my first year, and I managed to get to 5th on the team, although I ended up running 51st place at the state meet. By earning a Varsity letter in both academics and athletics I was given a 'scholar-athelete' patch, but that doesn't really say much. The only other achievement I have is president of the Model United Nations Team, where I have a bunch of 1st/2nd places from conferences.

My question is this: As I stand amid all my 4.4-earning friends and valedictorians, do I really have a chance at colleges like Stanford? I've developed a serious passion for running, and Stanford (which as excellent academics AND cross country) had become my goal until I seriously messed up my grades. To top it off, my parents are expecting me to go to a very prestigious college, and I don't want to let them down. So should I write a killer essay and try to play my cards right, or just admit defeat and don't bother?

Why do you want to apply to Stanford if academics is obviously not your thing? You have a 3.5 GPA and you’re ranked 88th.

A killer essay and running only help you if you have the grades to begin with.

Well, what would you want to pursue besides athletics? Why do you want to apply to Stanford? Does that university offer a strong athletics program? What other academic interests do you have besides athletics? In the end, just do what you want to do. If you want to focus on athletics, then go for it. It’s very helpful to go to a recognized university, but look for a university that will best fit you.

Good luck,
fellow asian girl.
P.S. I’m not good at math either. . .

If you are good enough to be recruited for cross country at Stanford, that’s the only way I see you getting in.

how rigorous are your classes?

Yeah if you’re truly an athlete, and want to do cross country at STANFORD, you’ll have to be good enough to be recruited. Otherwise, Cross Country alone at a mediocre level will not get you there unfortunately.
