I'm an average student, but what are my chances?

I’m really interested in becoming a veterinarian, which is why I am choosing Davis as my top school to attend… however my grades, scores, extracurriculars and such all lack compared to top-notchers. I just need your advice on what other college I should apply to considering my info and that I want to major in bio and minor in pre-vet.

 • English Honors, B
 • Physics, B
 • Geometry, B
 • Spanish, A
 • Leadership, A
 • Freshman class vice president
 • Volunteer at YMCA
 • Volunteer at my local library

Sophomore year

 • English Honors 2, A

 • Leadership, A
 • ASB Vice President of Finance & Records
 • Board Member of California Scholarship Federation
 • Went to a leadership camp (CADA) at UCSB
 • Awarded the “John Tuggle Award” (for outstanding service to the community of my high school)

Senior year, and my current grades as of now…

 • Varsity volleyball manager (I still get athletic credit like the actual players)
 • Working part-time

Unweighted GPA is ~3.6, ranked 109/784 in my senior class.
SAT 1450 and my excuse will be that I didn’t study, lol.

I’m taking the SAT again in November, and the ACT as well.

If Davis doesn’t seem realistic, where else should I apply?

A few other colleges you might be interested in applying to - Cal Poly Slo has a very good Animal Science Department for majors (but they don’t have an Animal Science/Pre-Vet minor) [Areas of Study - Animal Science Department - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](http://animalscience.calpoly.edu/AboutUs/AreasOfStudy/areas_of_study) . Fresno State has an Animal Science department with an Animal Science minor [Animal Sciences, Minor](Animal Sciences, Minor)

Cal Poly Pomona also has an Animal Science Major. Cal Poly Pomona is a little easier to get into than SLO but an excellent program. As of Fall 2014 is now an impacted program, so the requirements may be higher.

A quick correction - you are a much better than average student. You are well within the top 20% of your class and have a very competitive GPA and a solid list of ECs. You should be proud of your hard work and results.

That said, if you want to be a candidate for any UCs, you are going to need to get your test scores up. 1450 is way out of sync with your GPA. Take SAT again and really study/prepare. Take lots of times practice tests. I’d also suggest you take the ACT, some students do much better due to the test’s different approach.

With good test scores (approaching 1900+ SAT), Davis is not out of reach for you. Honestly, CalPoly SLO can be as selective as Davis in some majors so, If you are looking for a fallback in N Cal. CSU Chico has a good program too.
