I got an invitation to join the Phi Theta Kappa Society at my community college and I’m curious as to know whether or not I should join?
The membership fee appears to be $80, but I’m planning on speaking with the advisor of the society to see if I can get some sort of fee waiver for it since my family is very low income.
I’ve heard that joining the society looks good for college especially when transferring out, but I’m not sure if I should join since I noticed that there are quite a few colleges that give Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarships ONLY for members who are citizens or green card holders (I’m currently in the process of getting a green card but I don’t know when I’ll receive mine).
Since I’m not a citizen, I’m wondering if its even worth it for me to enter into the society as a non citizen member?
@dream98 I am currently in PTK at my community college and I definitely think its worth joining. Even if you don’t get a scholarship because of it, it’s still goes on your academic transcript and you can put it on your resume. If you get involved in the honor society at your school and hold an officer position next academic year, that’ll look really good to admissions. You only pay the fee once (or that’s how it is at my school at least). So I think it’s deff worth joining!
@transfer1124
Thank you very much for your response!
Do you know if there are any students that have earned scholarships from PTK without being too involved in it? Or did most of the scholarships go to students who held a position in the society or went to all the events?
@dream98 I’m the PTK Prez for my CC and it prob didn’t hurt my admission for UCI We only require 6 hrs comm service at my chapter and meetings count as an hour each. I didn’t apply for the scholarships, but it doesn’t hurt to try! There are specific scholarships that are offered to those with leadership positions in PTK.
It’s absolutely woethbir. Even if you don’t get a scholarship, admission officers at the 4-year college know what PTK means and it’ll help you. It may even help you get a scholarship from the college!
@dream98 Some schools give scholarships just off the fact you’re in it, some give scholarships if you’ve gotten your associates and you’re a member of PTK, and some you need a recommendation from the advisor. It all depends on the standards for each colleges PTK scholarship. Most universities with ties to your CC usually give a great scholarship if you’re in PTK. I know the ones in my area do!
Like what the previous comment said, even if you don’t get a scholarship/the school doesn’t give out scholarships for just PTK member, it looks awesome and it’ll still help because office of admissions knows what PTK is. Thus, possibly giving your application the boost it may need to be accepted or to get a merit scholarship
Should definitely go for it. If you are in Santa Monica I’d gladly help you pay your fee
