I work in the EOPS (Educational Opportunities Programs and Services) office at my CC and guess what? I’m not work study because I didn’t qualify for FA! But I have coworkers with the same position as me who are work study students. Just because you don’t qualify for work study doesn’t mean you can’t get an on campus job. Everyone has to jump through the same hoops at my school to get a job, the only difference is in compensation. If you demonstrate need (usually meaning, you have kids and are the sole provider) then you will get more money for the same work. It isn’t rocket science, the more needy you are, the more help you will receive.

Oh yeah, and when the FA office said that they ran out of money, they were probably 100% telling the truth (if you are in California that is). The state is so broke that my CC isn’t even offering EOPS this summer and the book voucher amount for Fall is going to be severely cut, which means that only the poorest students will get accepted into the program this year.

I don’t qualify for any FA or Cal Grants whatsoever and I’m absolutely broke. Sometimes it’s very frustrating because I need money too. But that’s okay with me because I look at my work study coworkers and see that their lives are so much harder than mine. I really have no room to complain.

OP- I don’t qualify for workstudy either. I’m thinking of working on campus as a lifeguard, but because workstudy students get the first shot at all campus jobs- including lifeguarding (assuming they’re certified)- I might not get hired. That would suck, but hey- so would having tens of thousands of dollars a year in loans. Being middle-class really isn’t that bad.

colboy, if you got the scholarship instead of a poor person they wouldn’t be whining on CC. They would be working harder to try to put themselves through college.

Ill probably get called some names as well but im kinda right there with your annoyment toward poor, minorities, and the uberly wealthy, but however its a class of the poor not the whole. It’s the ones who do absolutely nothing toward their education and apply for a scholarship and get it due to the family income box when clearly there are more qualified applicants. Dont get me wrong if there are poor people who put the time in and they deserve it. Im sort of ed that because my parents did well put themselves through college and made money (middle class) I get screwed. Its the lazy a people who do nothing and are rewarded. Thats kinda how it’s gonna be when the annointed one (Obama for those of you who have never heard that) gets his way with Obamacare. The government will take money you make and give it to the lazy a part of society (generally poor but not always). Kinda sounds like socialism dont ya think. Sorry kind of got off topic.

Oh and if poor is too harsh for some of you how about currency challenged

No, it’s not wrong . . . because you are accurately reflecting your level of maturity and commonsense.

If you were a Swede you’d blame the Finns. If you were black you’d blame a latino. If you were poor you’d blame the rich. If you were a native born black you’d blame an immigrant black. If you were a fundamentalist you’d blame the liberals. If you were a liberal you’d blame Bush. If you were French you’d blame the Germans. If you were anti-semitic you’d blame the jews. If you were Thai you’d blame the Chinese.

You’re not alone . . the thought pattern you’re in as old as humanity, and doesn;t need any objective data.

OP, you’ve already been beaten upon, so I’ll offer a different perspective.

What you’re experiencing is the squeezing of opportunities for the middle class. It’s what happens to a society that has been run by the rich for the rich for far too long. The poor do get some help in affirmative action, FA, etc. The rich get lots of help in the way of tax cuts (the richest Americans today pay less taxes than they did under Ronald Reagan. Bush the second was kind to his kind.) And the middle class? The buying power of the middle class stopped growing by the 80’s, while the cost of education, gas, food and many other basics rose considerably. Add to that chronically underfunded higher education systems and you’ve got… you. A student whose family’s income is too high to qualify for decent aid, and too low to offer you much in the way of help with expenses.

I agree. It’s not fair. A society without a thriving middle class is on its way to becoming the third world. So blame the voters, blame the government the voters put in, blame greed and narrowmindedness. Get mad. Start reading the newspapers & history books. Travel a little. Learn how society works and how it doesn’t and how you can make a difference, if not at large, than just for your own self.

Just don’t blame the poor. They have had it harder than you, and odds are still better that you, as the beneficiary of middle class basics which for them were unreachable luxuries, will end up living a better life.

You’ve had your rant. (We all need to vent.) I hope you feel better. But now get to work. And I mean that in the nicest way possible.

OK! Thank you people who’ve actually responded to me. I may have been a little bitter but it’s hard have perspective when something seems so unfair. Luckily, my hoop-jumping paid off and the FA office told me today I would be accepted for a work study within a few days.

Side note: I think Obama needs to make more aid available to college students - like lower loan rates and more availability. I feel like that’s something that he hasn’t done yet which he promised.

Agree with you a little bit but before he needs to stop being an idiot and pull his head out of his a. I hope the people who voted for him feel like sh for trippling the national debt and ruining the country with his 846 billion $ stimulus and a next one on the way. Freedom will no longer exist if you dont even have the right to care for yourself the way you choose. Obama is crushing the country with cap and trade and his other sh**y policies. What happens if china says we want our money back now!!! Hes just picked a idiot of a supreme court judge who has been overturned at the supreme court level 60% of the time, and effectively took the promotions conneticut fire fighters earned away from them because not enough minorities passed the test. This administration is ruining the country and im scared for when I enter the real world (im only 17).

Probably wasn’t wise to write such an ignorant comment on a forum dominated by Western/Northeastern people that won’t sympathize with your racism. I think you need to understand that your not the only one who has to take out loans (over 60% of college students) and you probably should get to know that the world doesn’t revolve around you, and you don’t always get what you want. I think you should move on to the next thing. Mcdonalds is a last resort, not plan B. I say you need to keep searching and grinding till you finally find something you personally want to do. Your highness.

you need to enter a world of facts, the national debt has gone up since July 2008, but most of that came under Bush’s various bailouts, only about a third of it was Obama.

It just shows how some people can be so gullible when it comes what they hear out of peoples mouths, and yes even the precious obama. Wake up and look at the facts before you speak next time.

I hope you dont get a brain tumor and have to wait 8 months to get surgery for it. There is a reason canadians come to america for healthcare. Again it just shows you the ignorance the majority of the american people.

you just sit back and pay 40-60% percent of your income in taxes to cover lazy a** welfare recipients while they get free healthcare. Like I said THERES A REASON CANADIANS COME TO AMERICA FOR HEALTHCARE
