I doubt anyone remembers me, but I spent some time on this board last summer before going off to BCT. Its refreshing to browse on through again and be reminded of how enthusiastic I was about coming here. I wanted to know every detail imaginable. UNcynical and several others were most helpful. Well, now I’m done with BCT and half-way through the academic year and I am hoping I can return the favor to anyone interested, and especially the future classes.

Ill try to spend some time looking through the threads and answering questions. Or if you have any questions about Four Degree year, post them here and Ill do my best to stay on top of them. I can tell you everything you ever wanted to know about life as a SMACK and probably in more detail than you ever cared to think about I like to type, and I like avoiding homework even more.

The little things are a lot like I expected. Except the food. My dads a 74 grad and back then Mitchs was rated the best chow hall in the Air Force. I was expecting that to still be the case. But who cares about the food? Well, I guess everyone does

One of the greatest shocks has been finding myself for the first time in my life somewhere other than on top (say, maybe the bottom of the top ¾ of my class ) Everyone knows the big fish, little pond concept, but its still surprising to experience it.

I agree the dynamics here are strange, especially when you first get here. Everyone here is used to being at the top, but when you get here, you realize that if you're lucky, you're "average" because as statistics dictate, everyone can't be at the top. Also, academics are usually more difficult than people are used to, particularly at the pace some courses move at. There is ample help available for those who seek it, but many people aren't used to having to ask for help. It can also be a culture shock for some people who had a 4.0+ in high shcool to suddenly have to work hard for C's sometimes. It's humbling, but just realize it's supposed to be that way! Just keep things in perspective. ;)

You said you like avoiding homework...but I have this image of 25 hours of work for 24 hours. Isn't the workload supposed to be impossible?
Does your day consist purely of classes, intramurals, homework, and sleep?
Is there any enjoyment from monday to friday?

Im not at the academy but my first year of college with 17 sem hours, 20 hours of work, classes, work, and homework are the main ones. Sleep is a luxuray that takes up precious hours of studing multivariable calculus.

It's not that ridiculous. It will be at first granted, but if you don't screw around constantly, you'll be fine. You just have to know when it's time to buckle down, or else you'll ned up doing all nighters all the time, which in the long run hurts a lot gradewise.

Yeah, I thought the same thing coming here, but it's not quite that bad, at least not the first year. For a few, such as inter-colligiate athletes, it might be exactly as you described, but not for most.

Like Shines said, you just need to keep on top of your work. If you do, you should have some time to yourself.

Oh, and I do like avoiding homework. Maybe some people can, but I can't usually study for hours straight without breaks.

You'll here the phrase "time managament" a lot here. It means exactly what it sounds like, and if you're good at, you'll win all around. You'll have more time for yourself and you'll do better in school. If you're not, you'll be up late nights, feel swampped, get stressed, and waste all the time that should be yours.
