I'm Better than You and I Know It!!! Chances.

Just kidding! I figured that writing something that is pretentious, yet pathetic at the same time would get a lot of kids to come in and look at my stats (please don’t hurt me!) So without further ado, here are the goods.

Favorite Colleges (in no particular order, other than alphabetical that is)
Boston College
Brown University
Duke University
Georgetown University
Tufts University

All Regular Decision
Undecided major

You can probably tell that there’s a special place in my heart for medium-sized schools on the east coast. I’m not applying for financial aid. Don’t worry, I do have more realistic schools on my list.

White/male

I go to a very prestigious (impossible not to sound pompous here) prep school; in the top 20 in the nation.

GPA: 4.15 (W); don’t know UW
School doesn’t rank, but I’d guess top 25% in a smaller-sized class
6 AP’s, many honors classes; courseload is considered rigorous, but not the most difficult possible.

ACT: Composite-34
English-35, Math-31, Reading-34, Science-35, Comb.English/Writing-32, Writing Score- 9 (What??? I thought it was really good, too!)

Most important extra-curriculars

Varsity Baseball (11-12)
JV Baseball (9-10)
Off-Season Baseball Leagues, etc (9-12)
Varsity Cross Country (10)
Ihigh.com Sports Writer (10-11)
JV Soccer (11)
Class Secretary (9); I also ran for class vice president twice (not that it matters, but at least shows that I tried to be a leader!)
Beta Club
Ultimate Frisbee (10-11); not-quite-official school team, that I play just for fun
Gourmet Club (9-10); wish I still had time for this. Such good food!

As you can see, baseball is my most meaningful extra-curricular. It is by far my most time-consuming and rewarding activity. I was recruited by a few Division III schools (none of the above listed, though).

Awards:
1) National Merit Commended
2) Spanish National Honor Society
2) Some honor rolls

That’s it.

Work experience:
No “real” jobs, but a couple of a cool things that I’ve done that I’m proud of.

Intern for production company (Summer before 11th grade): Long story, but I ended up getting to go out to Los Angeles and work on a major film set. Did lots of “interesting” odd jobs, and by interesting I mean mostly getting to move boxes and direct traffic.

Head coach/umpire for baseball (Summer before 12th grade): Very enlightening experience for me. I coached a little league team in a lower/middle class area. I did this completely on a whim; the team was going to have to forfeit because they had no coach. I know its cliche, but it really taught me a lot about being a responsible adult and helping out others. Also umpired games, even though I had no idea what I was doing.

Recommendations: 1 outstanding, 1 pretty good.

So, this leads us to the age-old question. What are my chances? Thanks in advance for any help or advice, it is greatly appreciated.

Anyone who answers will get an e-hug, if wanted. (You know you can't resist!)

In everywhere....although maybe not Brown or Duke, depending entirely on your luck.

You should be in everywhere including Brown and Duke. Thats if everything you say is true. I believe you. Good luck.

Bump to get back on the first page. Any more responses are much appreciated, whether they predict good or bad outcomes. I want to hear the truth, and nothing but!

I think you have good chances at BRown

Your best source for chances is your college counselor's scattergrams of acceptances/wl/rejects by GPA/SAT. For most kids, top 25% would doom them at most of the schools on your list. With a very well-respected private - with connections - this is not the case. But some of it is going to depend on their clout with the colleges on your list.

You come across as an accomplished writer in your posts, and if you are careful with your essays that is certainly going to be to your benefit. Good luck with all your applications. I hope you are accepted at Duke - I think you would have a blast there!

Thanks guys for all of the helpful comments. As deadlines approach, I cannot help but become more anxious and nervous, wondering about what I should do. I have been seriously considering applying to Tufts EDII. The only problem is, though I'm sure that I would truly enjoy attending (I have been there a couple of times and liked what I saw), the voice in the back of my head keeps telling me not to do this; subconciously, Brown is where I want to be, if I don't get into my first choice. I'm just concerned that if I don't apply early, I may not get into Tufts or Brown in the regular decision pool, and become SOL. I know that you guys can't give me a concrete answer to what I should do (it's all up to me, after all), but any advice on this matter would be appreciated. In the end, though, I just feel fortunate that I have the opportunity to "have" to deal with these "tough" decisions.

Do you have a safety that youre happy with lined up? I think you have great chances at Tufts, even RD, and you would get in there ED II for sure. If Brown, which is definitely a reach because it is one for everyone, is where you want to be, don't beind yourself to Tufts because you will always wonder if you could have spent your college years in Providence;-)

To answer your question Collegegrl88, I do have safeties that I would be comfortable going to. I would be lying, though, if I told you I wouldn't be upset if I didn't get into one of my top five or six schools (listed above).

Edit- I'll only be awake for the next half hour or so, so some opinions on my chances before I go to sleep would be appreciated.

bump...............

Does anybody want to do the percentage or reach, match, etc. thing that's all the rage around here for me? It would be stupendous.

Boston College: Match
Brown: Reach
Duke: Slight Reach
Georgetown: Match
Tufts: Match

I'm sorry, but can someone explain to me exactly what match, reach, etc. mean? I know, I asked for them, so I should know what they are. For example, when I am a "match" for G-town, does that mean my chances are that of the average applicants chances (in the 20%'s) or more like the 50%'s. I tried looking at previous posts but was unsuccessful. Thanks.

Can anyone with experience on this website please answer my above question? I would figure it out myself, but the search function is down for the night apparently. Also, commenting on my chances is welcomed and appreciated.

Well, I just got flat out REJECTED by Yale. Bummmer because I was hoping I would at least be deferred. Oh well, at least now I get to do lots of applications over winter break! I want to put this setback behind me as soon as possible, so I would like to know my chances now at these schools, plus Emory (which I might do EDII). Peace, ya heard me?

Edit- Does anybody have stories about kids who got rejected early, then got in to like all of their other college choices? I know, it's sad that i need this kind of reassurance.

the baseball looks good. it shows enthusiasm in a specific area. EC's are a bit weak though, it seems you played a variety of sports for short periods of time. grades are strong though. match means you have a good chance. reach means your chances are not so great, but its not impossible.

Recognized your name from your post in my thread and didn't feel like finding your thread but then it got bumped to the first page so here I am.

I feel like I might have been a borderline acceptance into Georgetown, and we do have similar stats. Looking at SAT scores of acceptances/deferrals to Georgetown (although I believe the SAT score is a good measure of general intelligence so that has something to do with it), it seems as though Georgetown strongly considers SAT scores. That ACT score is pretty nice though. Looking at the deferrals on the Georgetown EA thread on their board kinda worries me, though. Georgetown: match (maybe a slighter lean toward safety if I'm wrong about myself being a borderline acceptance)

I have two friends who got flat out rejected to BC (not even deferred!) who are both pretty smart. One top 20% with a 33 ACT and one top 15% with a 1390 V/M SAT. But I'm from Massachusetts (which BC sees about 453623 million applicants from) and I got in. BC: safety

Tufts: Don't really know that much. I know kids that got rejected, but again I'm from MA which will kill you at a school that's looking for diversity like Tufts. I'd say it's probably a safety match school.

Brown and Duke: I mean I could tell you what I've heard, but really I don't know anything firsthand. Neither is a safety (obviously) nor an obscene reach.

Best of luck!

Boston College- match
Brown University- huge reach
Duke University- huge reach
Georgetown University- reach
Tufts University- slight reach

im not being mean juss wat i think...if ur weighted GPA is a 4.15 that means u have gotten a heck more B's than A's in honors or AP classes and u say that u have taken mostly honors/AP so that means ur unweighted GPA should also be somewhere below 3.5 which makes schools like brown and duke extremely hard to get into. ur ACT scores and extracurricular activities are pretty good but they may not be enuf to compensate for the most important factor in college apps

heybucs: Thank you for your in-depth analysis. Hopefully you are right in your predictions but you never know with 29289240938029 qualified kids applying to the schools I mentioned. Where did you get your screenname from? Are you a Buccaneers fan?

Lunar Comet: Thanks for stopping by. I don't have access to my transcript right now, but I can tell you that my unweighted G.P.A is higher than 3.5; if I had to guess, probably 3.7. I think that my school's system is typical, but here it is (well, at least the parts that are important)

0.5 added for Honors
1.0 added for AP

(B-): 2.67 80-82%
(B): 3.00 83-86%
(B+):3.33 87-89%
(A-):3.67 90-92%
(A): 4.00 93-96%
(A+):4.33 97-99%

Off the top of my head, I can tell you that I do perform well in AP/honors, and have never finished a course (for the year) with less than an 88% (about 3 or 4 in the 88-89% range), although I am notorious for hanging around the A- range; I don't really "excel" in one particular area, just solid in most. I'm just not sure that you noticed I go to a competitive prep school; 100% of kids go to four-year schools, about 18% go Ivy, and we have tons of kids that go to Northwestern, etc. My G.P.A there is considered very good, but not outstanding.

Edit- I just remembered that I got a 4.4 W in my first term this year, so everything's looking good for the mid-year report.

You would probably get in all of the schools on your list.
