Hey, guys. I've got a question about your experiences in terms of admissions to Rose. They recently made an admissions decision that I don't really agree with, and i'm trying to figure out why this is.

I was admitted to Rose with an SAT score of 1530 and a weighted GPA of 4.44. My ACT was 33 composite with 35 M and 34 V. My friend just received a rejection letter yesterday. He's got an SAT score of 1590. His GPA, however, is about a 3.8 weighted. He's one of the smartest guys I know when it comes to math and science...smarter than I am.

My question is this: why was he rejected and I accepted? Now, I did apply a bit earlier than he did, but not a bunch earlier. Does Rose take grades and couseload difficulty into account more than SAT scores? He had a few C's on his transcript...maybe that did him in. But I just fail to see how Rose can reject a 1590 SAT score, ESPECIALLY when the average for this year's class was 1300. That's a complete mystery to me.

I dont think that they consider that SAT to be more important than the grades. I have a 1400 SAT and a 3.7 GPA unweghted and got in. They look at things beyond the SAT and i think the few Cs that he got may have been the problem..
Besides that, college acceptance is a kind of a game.. u never know who may get in!

I suppose you're right. And it's true about the acceptances being a game...I imagine that he'll get into a few colleges that I won't, mainly due to SAT score and math/sci contest scores.

Well maybe it's EC's, cause I applied very late, had at the highest, a B average, and had SATs of 1420. I not only was accepted, but got financial aid w/o asking for it (and not need based, and I don't have to pay it back), and got about a billion letters from them saying how much they wanted me. My biggest EC was starting a meat club that got on the biggest radio station in PA and in multiple newspapers. I also did 3 Varsity Sports and I'm guessing my recs said stuff about me being very social. They have enough "just smart" people there, trust me. They want girls (they need more...much much more), and people who are athletic/leaders. Now that I am at rose, I'm in about 6-7 clubs, Every IM sport, in a frat, and have a 3.88 GPA. That's higher than a lot of the people their who are the "just smart" people. Rose can break you if you don't know how to unwind. Of course not being serious academically will get you a .88 GPA like the kid across the hall from me too. So I guess the point of this post is, everyone I talk to at Rose seems to have been top 10 in their class, they have enough of them, they want other types of people.

SAT scores aren't everything, and unless it's too low, won't make a huge difference. One of the good benefits of having a good SAT score is scholarship opportunities. Yes, they look at other things besides just SAT scores and grades. For example, they look to see what kinds of activities/clubs/sports you were involved with. They not only want smart people, but also well-rounded. It's good to have work experience and volunteer/community service on your resume. So if I had to guess, it may have been those kinds of factors.

I don't know Rose's admissions policies, but just looking from a logical perspective the SAT hasn't really shown great correlation with college success, while (this is me speculating, don't know of any studies on the matter) HS course grades show how much you work - not just how well you can fill in the bubbles.
