I'm confused--do all incoming freshmen have to take the language placement exam?

Question is in the title. :D

I’m guessing it’s only if you want credit/placement for a specific language. If you’re confused though, the easiest way to get the real answer is to email someone from UMD.

Well, here’s a link on foreign language placement:

[University of Maryland | Testudo | Schedule of Classes | Foreign Language Placement](http://www.testudo.umd.edu/soc/foreign.html)

If you took AP Language exams and scored a 4 or 5 you can place out of introductory foreign language courses in German, French, Latin and Spanish. You’ll need to score a 5 to place out of Italian 204 though. See here:
[Transfer Credit Center | Advanced Placement Exams (AP)](http://www.tce.umd.edu/apchart.html)

Thanks! 10 char

I received credit for French 203, 204, and 211, as a result of scoring a 5 on the French AP exam, however, this seems to vary greatly by the language you studied.
