I filed the 2017-2018 FAFSA and I know that will cover this fall semester and then the winter semester. If I want to take spring or summer classes in 2018, will my FAFSA cover those spring/summer semesters or no?If not, I will fill out the 2018-2019 FAFSA, would that cover those semesters?
The spring ‘semester’ is most likely part of the 2017-18 year. Usually a school only has 2 semesters, so are you at a quarter school with both a winter term and a spring term? Schools decide if their summer sessions are part of the prior school year or the next. You’ll have to ask your school.
You should also be aware that there is a maximum amount for Pell and loans, and many schools grant this for the 2 main semesters or 3 quarters, so there isn’t much left to award in the summers. Pell is now allowed to be granted for the summer, but going full time in the summer may not be possible so it may not be a full grant.
Academic years generally run August/Sept to May, with summer session being June & July. So 2017-18 would be August/Sept 2017 to May 2018.
