i'm doubting whether cornell is worth it

i'm a cali student and am looking in to a top engineering school. cornell has been my first choice (early decision), but i'm starting to to wonder why i shouldn't just attend school in cali for various reasons below.

compared to UC berkeley, uc sandiego, ucla, stanford, harvey mudd...........cornell is on par academically. compared to the UC's specifically, cornell is wayyyyy more expensive. you can save almost $100k for the 4 years! that's a lot of money!

benefits of cali schools in terms of weather over cornell or any other private school in east coast:
go out at nights during the winter and play outdoor basketball, tennis, football, etc...
go out and just chill during the nights and have fun without the freeze
see girls wear skimpier clothes =D
go to the lovely beaches of california or go to the mountains whenever!
be able to leave your window open at night and enjoy nice cooool fresh air!

what do u guys think?

I agree. Berkeley engineering is a solid alternative to Cornell.

While the UCs are at face value cheaper, you may be offered a better fin aid package at Cornell.

And don't discount the experience of living across the country.

UCLAri has valid points, but so does the OP...any top school will give you a similar education. How well you do depends greatly on the environment. If cali is your thing and the northeast is not appealing then maybe cornell isn't for you.

I was kind of the opposite: i love to ski, and i like the cold, so cornell's location and weather were more appealing :)

I think Cornell's worth it. It's an excellent school. But you have to have the initiative to take advantage of it.

I know several people who went there and, while they were all very frustrated with the red tape and impersonal size of the school, most of them managed to take advantage of the resources there. Then again, there were others who definitely should not have gone there.

but posterX, just because it's "worth it" doesn't mean it's necessarily better for this guy than berkeley...that's what's up for debate. Nobody has ever doubted that cornell is at the top of the engineering field.

From a Cornell Alumni:

Stay in California. Trust me.

How funny... that's what my friend from Penn said he wished he had done.

FYI ivyBS, and I mean this in total helpfulness not in an agravated way but:

singular is Alumnus, female alumna, and plaural is Alumni, female Alumnae. just for future reference, very common mistake.

sparticus,

There's no 'a' in "plural," but there's a second 'g' in "aggravated."

Hahahah. Couldn't help myself. :-P

thanks hahaha...isn't automatic spell check in Word horrible for one's spelling?

Do not apply Early Decision. Apply RD to Cornell and check out the package you get. I agree that paying full price for Cornell when you can go to Cal for less than half that price is crazy, but Cornell may give you good aid.

much thanks to all!

decisions decisions decisions!

since i posted benefits of cali schools....i'll return with the counter argument

benefits of cornell:

4? on msn's schools with best cafeteria food. i've tried it. it is very good. especially appell commons and RPC

biggest ivy league = more people to meet
GORGES! campus is gorges, ithaca is gorges
2 creeks/streams running through campus

Alexandre- I paid more than twice the price for Cornell over Cal, but that was because I actually wanted to leave California and experience the east coast people! So, it's actually not that crazy (if you have the money for it).

If your parents are wealthy, there is nothing wrong with your decision. To some families, $100,000 is a lot...to others, it is nothing. Cornell is as good as Cal and if you wanted to experience somthing different, it makes sense.

er.. this is just a question for financial aid..

if i get accepted by Cornell.. and i live with a single mom (low income) with a brother in college.. how much is she expected to pay?

her yearly income is about 20,000.. and she already has to pay around 20k for my brother's college tuition..

bump

wanna get more input on this

So why ED to cornell?

Alexandre, i don't know if i want to experience something different.

apply RD and make the decision later

Unless money is no object, I would go with Berkeley.

BUT, apply to cornell anyway, they might be generous with financial aid, depending on how much you're eligible for. I thought Cornell was gong to be my most expensive option, in the end it was one of the cheapest.

My suitemate from Cali tells me Berkeley is overcroweded in some classes, which may be true. But it is a great school, comparible with Cornell.

The quality of education @ Berkeley is nothing near that of Cornell, especially if you go for an impacted major.
