So, here’s the thing. I had a dentist, who I liked and saw every so often. Yet eventually we switched due to various reasons. However when I got to my new dentist, he revealed to me so much stuff about my condition that makes me incredibly bitter against my old dentist. Here’s what each dentist said about my teeth condition; [Note: switch was recent, past week]

Dentist 1 [Old]: Your teeth are perfect. One cavity - there, filled perfectly! Your wisdom teeth are ok too, keep em!

Dentist 2 [New]:

That filling is broken, and your tooth has decayed beyond repair due to the filling being improperly placed in. We will have to remove the entire tooth, the bad method of filling and the resultant decay has damaged the tooth beyond repair.

Your teeth aren’t perfect. There are numerous cavities that are easily seen, and some of them seem to have been there for a very long time, and are approaching the nerve.

Your Wisdom teeth are at critical levels. Remove as soon as possible, they are slanted which makes them slower to cause damage and pain but you must remove them very soon as they will be causing severe pain soon.

I am incredibly angry and dissapointed at the incompetence of Docter 1. I’m glad I switched. This is outrageous, and now I’m going to have three teeth removed thanks to him.

We had a great dentist whom we all loved and trusted. Still do, but unfortunately our insurance company was not accepted by him. our kids still go to him and we pay out of pocket.

My husband and I opted to see the dentists within our network.
We tried one out..neither of us liked him. To begin with, he had pictures of himself all over his office.
Yes, he was pretty, but why was necessary for him to display himself at every turn of the office set up ?

According to him , we were in rough shape...needed immediate attention to all of the dangers in our mouths. We thought that we were doomed ..until we opted to go to another dentist.
Let's just say that the egomaniac dentist exaggerated a bit. We are both fine, with the exception of having a couple of old fillings replaced. Pretty routine, I have been told.

This occured 7 yrs ago , and we have had no troubles whatsoever.
My feeling is that the dentist who made us panic was trying his best to run up a hefty bill for our insurance company, or us.

Maybe , it would benefit you to get another opinion.

Yeah, I'd say get yourself a second opinion. It seems like this guy is trying to get you to do as much dental work as possible so he can fill his calendar up with expensive additions to checkups.

I agree with a previous poster who suggested that you may need another opinion from a third dentist. Over ten years ago Readers Digest sent a mystery patient into dozens of dentists offices around the USA and the variability in the proposed treatment plans was amazing. I am NOT saying that your new dentist is wrong. But please ask yourself...are you in pain from the filling that was placed previously? Are your wisdom teeth causing you discomfort? Did your new dentist show you the radiographs he took and explain where you had untreated decay, where the filling was deteriorating or how the wisdom teeth were growing? I urge caution...Placing a crown over the 'damaged filling', placing several new fillings and extracting your wisdom teeth could cost thousands of dollars....

Yea, he showed me the spot with the decay and the filling. I actually do feel pain in the filling area, just I had thought it was natural due to the nature of the filling, but apparently the x-rays he showed me that he took on the same day showed some nasty stuff with that one tooth.

The wisdom teeth, Idk, he showed the x ray to me and it looked pretty crunched together and ready to push against my back molars.

that's kind of like my situation. i had an extremely bad orthodontist. he took my braces off way too early and now my bottom teeth are extremely crooked and he's charging us to get my braces back on. we are switching to a new orthodontist though because he's an idiot.

I see...the main problem I have with it though is that I'm probally going to lose THREE teeth! I like my wisdom teeth, but the main is that I'm losing a regular molar, because the improper filling caused massive unknown and unmonitored decay, and at such a young age! *****!

I kinda agree with Tyler. Yeah, the dentist is bad but you KNOW when you have bad teeth. Most people get one cavity and they're in a lot of pain. You shouldn't have let it go that long. But that's no excuse for your dentist.

cavities only hurt when they reach the nerves... and when the cavity reaches the nerve, that calls for a root canal (that means it's in extremely critical condition)

and getting cavities doesn't mean you don't brush your teeth. I brush my teeth twice a day, at least 4 minutes each time with an electrical spinning brush. I still got cavities due to the structure/shape of my molars (large grooves, so the brush can't thoroughly clean some parts of the teeth). Oh, and I almost never drink soda or eat candy either.

the problems that you listed are completely the dentist's fault. You can't tell if you have broken fillings, cavities (if they reside in the way back like most do), or bad wisdom teeth unless you get them checked out by a dentist.
